New Wizzard Media Stats

Podcasting network Wizzard Media today announced that podcast downloads from their network were up by 45% in Q2, compared to 2008.

For the second quarter of 2009, Wizzard Media saw total network podcast download requests of 350,053,574 vs. 241,600,000 download requests in the second quarter of 2008

The company also reported:

The audience consuming podcasts from shows on the Wizzard Media Network grew 41% (5.3 million).

Wizzard Media Network advertising impressions served through its proprietary Alchemy advertising engine grew from 3.9 million in the second quarter of 2008 to 13.7 million in the second quarter of 2009, an increase of 251%.

Wordprss 2.8 New Features

Install Plugins from within Wordpress - This is a feature and seems to work well. Instead of going to wordpress.org and finding the plugin, downloading it, unzipping it, and then re-uploading it to your website, you can now do all that from within Wordpress with just a few clicks.

Install Themes From Within Wordpress- This feature didn't work on their website, but apparently when they moved this featured so you can do it inside your Wordpress install, they didn't enhance the search feature. I was not impressed. Its easier when you find a theme, but finding a theme was not any easier.

In today's episode I talk about how I've been earning three figure incomes using affiliate marketing. You can find products that fit your audience at places such as Share a Sale and Commission Junction. You are assigned a specific URL so that when people click your link and then purchasr that product, you earn a commission.

Well it just so happens that the School of Podcasting has an affiliate program that currently is paying 30% of the sale when anyone signs up, and 10% for every month they stay signed up. I also have an affiliate program for another membership site I have is at Marketing Musician where you earn 20% for every person that signs up.

So many people want to try to sell advertising on their podcast like radio does. PODCASTING IS NOT RADIO. Let's talk about advertising. You can get help, or you can do it yourself. Let's take a peak.

Well the problem is many people think Podcasting as if it is Radio where you might get $10-$15 per 1000 listeners. The key point is, you have to have the radio on at the time, and be listening. If not you miss it - you miss it. With podcasting that advertisement will be there tomorrow, and it will be there a year from now. People find a podcast and go back and download all the old episodes (with the advertisement). So if they think a podcast is the same as radio, they are HORRIBLY mistaken.

There are other things to consider. Will you put a link to their website on your website? Is there an image, banner, etc. You can use these to negotiate price with the potential advertiser.

YOU need to prove that you are sending the advertiser traffic. I recommend getting some sort of click tracking software ( Cloak and Tracker is my favorite ) so I can say "I've delivered 152 visitors to your site). An alternative is to have the advertiser set up a landing page (www.theirwebsites.com/podcast) so they can see the traffic and KNOW it came from you. You might also see if the advertiser has a way to produce a coupon or a special deal (again so they know that when this coupon was used, that customer came from your podcast). You have to provide the proof.

I am actually making more money with affiliate marketing instead of selling CPM (cost per thousand). When the visitor buys using a unique link from me, I get a commission. This works when you find the right product that matches your audience. You can find affiliate program at places like Share a Sale, and Commission Junction. You also need to make it easy to get to your affiliate link. So you can set up a subdomain on your website that redirects to your affilaite link. You can also set up an entire store if you are using Amazon.com's affiliate tools. To see this in action go to http://shop.growyourchurchshow.com (however Amazon requires a TON of traffic to make any significant money).

As for how much to charge, if you're going the CPM route, somewhere around $15 - $20 CPM is unfortunately very low, but typical (well actually a pipe dream). I feel this is because people don't understand that the advertisement is permanent (unless you go back and edit it out). This model pays the bills when you have 10,000 listeners per episode. That works for a chosen few podcasters.

Doing a quick google search on CPM pricing for radio. I found the following:

according to an August study from the IAB and Bain Capital, the average CPMs on ad networks ranged from 60 cents to $1.10

$9 CPM for a radio spot

$1-$2 per CPM
So you can see where when I say "$10-$15" per CPM, I'm already getting more than radio. The bad news is I don't have the audience of radio.

On the other side, I got a $200 affiliate check last week. If I was selling CPM at $20 (again, some would call that a fantasy) I would have had to have 10,000 downloads. As most of my podcasts have about 500 listeners that would've taken me about 5 months or $10 a show. The good news is I've been promoting this program for about two months (not five). I've done 8 shows in two months, so that means I'm getting paid $25 a show (or $50 per cpm 25/500 X 1000 - I think my math is correct)). I won't retire on this, but with affiliate marketing I make just as much (if not more) than CPM, and its ever green. I get paid whenever a visitor acts (not if the advertiser decides to renew their agreement).

Just remember if you have advertising, you are going to have to prove that you sent them traffic (if you want them to renew their advertising when it runs out).

You want your podcast name to be obviously describe what the podcast is about. When I typed in “online dating” at podcast alley I had search results that showed:

Podato

The Jeff Outlaw Show

Turtlecast

Can you tell these shows are about online dating? me neither.

Today I show you my "podcast table" where I have my microphone arm, my mixer, my microphone, my DBX 286A all on a table that I can move to any room to record. If you have a quiet room, you can think about the Audio Technica 2020 or the Audio Technica 3035, if you will be battling some noise, you might consider the Sure SM58 microphone. I have a very noisy hard drive, so I'm using the Zoom H4 portable recorder. The key piece of equipment is the pop filter.

The key is to plug the output from one piece of equipment into the input of the next piece in line. Typically its microphone, mixer, and then into the unit that you are using to record the show. If you are using a computer to record, I used the tape out of the mixer and put it into the line input of the computer. If you are using the portable recorder, you can use the main outputs of the mixer and send them into the main inputs.

I've been using the Powerpress plugin (from blubrry) as there is a section built into the plugin. Be very careful with this and make sure all your settings are accurate. You need to be looking at the advanced mode, and its on the "feeds general" area.

If you want to see what iTunes is currently using as the RSS feed, then go find your podcast in iTunes (after you've subscribed to it and RIGHt click on the PODCAST 9not the episode) and choose "show description." You will see the name of the podcast and the URL it is getting the episodes from at the top.

Podcast Vs Episode Album Art

You show (podcast) has a name (let's call it "Happy Days").

Each episode has a name (like "Fonzy Jumps the shark).

Your show has album art. You can speicify this album art for iTunes in servces like feedburner, or the Powerpress plugin (and others). Here you specify what the album art is for the SHOW.

Album art for the show has NOTHING to do with album art for the episode from a technical point of view. If you want album art to show up when people play your episode (for example in iTunes or on an ipod or zune), that image needs to be saved INSIDE the media (mp3, mv4) file in the ID3 tags. You can use iTunes to edit ID3 tags by importing your episode into iTunes, then right click on and choose get information.

Keeping the Family Out of the Recording Studio

You can get a remote control that turns the power on/off at the outlet. Then you can plug a lamp into that outlet. Place this outside the room you record in, and when the family sees the light they know not to come inside. If the light is off, then they are free to come on in. The classic "ON AIR" lights are a bit expensive. I've found some on ebay.com for about 30 bucks

Troubleshooting Wordpdress

When I troubleshoot my Podcast Fast Pass client's websites a majority of the time it is a conflict with one of the plugins. You can go in and turn off all the plugins, and then see if the problem goes away. If it does, then go in and turn on ONE plugin and test the site. Keep repeating until you find the plugin that is causing the issue.

If you can't even login, then go into your website via FTP and delete the plugins in the plugins folder. You can install them later.

<itunes:summary>Keeping the Family Out of the Recording Studio
