Use Facebook Groups and Lists To Market Your Business Online

With all the changes to the Facebook Timeline Pages for business, most of the focus has been on how to setup your Timeline while staying within the guidelines. Previous we walked through the features and setup of the Timeline. Now it’s time to start using the pages and features to your advantage. Let’s look at a work around for what the Facebook Timeline has removed and focus on how you can use Facebook Groups and Lists to ensure your business still connects with customers to regain the free marketing platform you are used to.

The Facebook Groups and Lists feature is often overlooked as a way of promoting content or communicating with your audience but with only 16% of status updates getting to your fans, it’s a great work around to ensure that everyone who should see your updates, does. Create focus groups where you can poll and chat with everyone at once or customize the type of content you distribute to reach a more targeted audience. If your business is support related, you can also create group pages as a forum for certain topics as reference for users. The possibilities are endless.

Create A Group In Timeline

If you have a regular Timeline Page, start by logging into your Facebook account and navigating to the Facebook Groups creation page and click “Create Group”. Create the type of group you want and add friends from your list to that group.

Pick a category icon and name the group. Next, select the privacy settings you want for the group. “Public” allows anyone to see the group information page, members of the group and the posts by the group members. The “Closed” option only allows members to see the posts but anyone can see the group page and the members of the group. The “Secret” option only allows members of the group to see any information about the page, group members and posts. When you have a security option selected, press “Create”.

Create A Group List In TimeLine Pages For Business

Click on the gear icon under your Timeline Cover to open a drop down menu. From the menu select the “Add To Interest Lists”. Click on New List and a window will pop up where you can select the people and pages to feature.

Name the Group List and select the security option you want to have for the page. The “Public” setting allows anyone to see your list and subscribe to it. The “Friends” option allows only friends to see your List and subscribe to it. The “Only Me” option wouldn’t be visible to anyone. It would only be seen by you.

The members in the List will be notified as a private message in their notifications when you make updates and posts in that group page. This means when they sign on to their Facebook page, your content will be waiting there for them, not lost in the feed of thousands of other updates and posts. This could be a very good marketing strategy for business if they take advantage of the feature and do a little leg work to get it going.

The Option To Choose

In addition to creating Groups and Lists for your business, users can take advantage of another neat feature in the new Timeline. The ability to go beyond the Like button is now possible. Users have more control over groups they belong to and what things they get subscribed to in their news feed. In the old Facebook Pages, the Like button would disappear after a fan joins your page. Now if a fan hovers over the Like button of your page, there’s an option to start an interest list to see special news feeds on related topics or create a new list customizing who is in the list and what pages the content comes from. Fans can also choose to subscribe to your lists (which will appear in the drop down menu) to have your general status updates displayed in their new feeds and unlike the page if it turns out to be something they no longer want to see updates for.

Get Discovered By Creating Specific Lists

Creating a topic specific list is an excellent way to get noticed by potential fans. By creating a list in a certain niche that’s relevant to your business or field, you will broaden your reach beyond the fans that already know about you. When a fan subscribes to one of your Lists, if it’s public or closed, it will be visible to all their friends. To do this, pick a category in the lists tab and then click on the people and pages you want that list to include.

Name your List and decide which security option you want for it. Click done and it will now be added to your drop down of Lists viewers can subscribe to.

Encourage Fans To Spread The Word

Once you have your Timeline setup the way you want and Lists created, it’s time to spread the word! Share it to your audience so that others are made aware of the lists and topics related to your product. Once they follow, their friends are notified and others may join them. The more people who subscribe, the more authority that list has when users search for lists to follow.

The Importance of Buttons and Strong Calls to Action

Whether you are trying to convert targeted visitors to buyers, or curious web surfers to “FREE” members, the recipe you will usually need to follow when constructing your landing page is the same: that is, you must strive to have an unambiguous and clear call to action on your web page.

Some Internet Marketers like to use the term “primary call to action” to refer to the most important action which you would like any person viewing that page to perform.

There are also other levels of call to action types which are sometimes referred to as “secondary call to action” and “subordinate call to action” but these are lower down on the importance scale when compared to the primary call to action.

The primary call to action is the ultimate goal of your landing pages and it defines the purpose of why you have that page on your site to begin with.

A primary call to action should generally be represented by some kind of button although this is not strictly always the case.

Human beings surfing the Internet seem to be psychologically drawn to buttons and people are almost instinctively compelled to click them if they feel that the situation calls for it.

This is why well designed and strategically placed buttons are often the best tools you can employ for your primary call to action.

Qualities of Effective Buttons and Button Copy

The button representing your primary call to action must be easily identifiable and its purpose should be clear and unambiguous.

The information below is an outline of what to look for in the qualities of your button in order to make it achieve its intended purpose of getting people to perform your primary call to action.

1) Button Text and Copy

You should always aim to be specific with the words that you place inside your buttons rather than generic.

Being specific, concise and clear with the button copy leaves no doubt in the visitor’s mind about what they should expect when they click your button.

For instance, some examples of effective button copy are shown:

“Sign Up For Free”
“Get Your Copy Now”
“Start Creating Today”

You may notice a pattern in the above statements.

They all start with familiar verbs (Get, Sign, Start) and they all contain either a statement of value (ie, Free) or a promise of instant gratification (Now, Today)

2) Using case in your button text

Internet Marketers have found through their research that the way you present the text in the button can also make difference as to how noticeable your button is to the people reading your web page.

Using title case, where the first letter of each word is in capitals, is one easy and effective way to make your button appear more eye catching and readable to your visitors.

3) Good button design and placement

It seems that some buttons are better than others when it comes to effectiveness.

This is why choosing your button design can mean the difference between a conversion or a lost sale.

But what makes one button better than another?

Below are some good button design characteristics which you might want to consider when selecting your buttons:

Use an eye-catching color which stands out:
Some colors which are pleasing to the eye include green, blue, orange.
The color red can sometimes be used too but remember that it can also tend to be associated with some kind of warning or danger.
Your button should be large and bold:
Because your button will often be associated with a primary call to action, you should make it noticeable and large enough that it stands out and is not obscured by the content on your page.The definition of large can vary from site to site, but your button should be at least as big if not larger than your logo.
Placement of your button:
The positioning of your buttons is another important factor which can affect your landing page’s effectiveness.In general, you should position your primary call to action button within the first few hundred pixels of the top of your page.If your landing page contains a lot of copy and the reader will need to scroll at least more than a page’s worth of content, then you should also consider placing your button at least one time on your page.

For instance if your landing page is long enough, your primary call to action button may appear near the top of the page, then somewhere in the middle and lastly at the bottom of the page.

By placing your call to action in several places you are making it easy for your readers to buy if they want to.

Using Click Triggers to Enhance Button Effectiveness

In some cases a button needs some kind of a catalyst to convince somebody to click it.

This is where some Internet Marketers use what’s known as click triggers with their buttons.

A click trigger is basically a message or piece of text which is placed near or inside the boundaries of a primary call to action with the aim of persuading somebody to go ahead and click the button.

The click trigger message usually serves to alleviate doubts somebody might have before purchasing something.

Examples of effective click triggers which you could place near your button are:

“Risk Free”
“Free Shipping”
“No Questions Asked Money Back Guarantee”
“Save 50% – March Only”

Quite often you’ll see many web sites with multiple click trigger messages placed near their primary call to actions and buttons.

Don’t be afraid to apply click triggers liberally to your call to actions.

Secondary and Subordinate Calls To Action

We mentioned earlier that in addition to your primary call to action, you might also have secondary and subordinate calls to action on the same page.

A secondary call to action is usually represented by a large text link or even a button, but it is designed to serve a secondary purpose to your primary call to action.

For instance if someone wanted to “Find Out More” about your product or service, then this is a great example where you would create a button to serve as your secondary call to action.

You should strive to differentiate your secondary call to action button from the primary by making it smaller in size and/or a different color.

The subordinate call to action is almost always represented as a text link and is even further down the list of importance but can still serve a useful purpose.

This type of call to action can be used to help navigate a user to another page where they might seeking some related information.

In summary, applying the above information and techniques to your landing pages is the best way to learn what works for you. Remember that each site and niche might have its unique quirks so don’t be afraid to experiment.

Keep Your Windows PC Secure Without Paying for Third-Party Applications

Everyone’s freaked out, especially when big organizations start getting hacked in larger numbers every day. Companies are currently trying to profit from the fear people have by selling them security solutions that many of them don’t need. I’ve been anti-virus-free since 2002 and haven’t since had one single problem with a computer. However, there are many reasons some people who aren’t experts in assembly code need an anti-virus, and no one should deny them that. What I’m here to say is that you don’t really need to pay for applications made by anyone other than Microsoft to keep your PC free of issues.

1. Stick With Microsoft Security Essentials

Gone are the days you have to shell out money for computer security just to get rid of a couple of viruses every year. For its customers, Microsoft already offers an application called “Microsoft Security Essentials“. It doesn’t come as part of your Windows installation, but it’s been around, and it’s been free for a very long time. You can download it if you run Windows Vista (32 or 64 bit) or later.

Microsoft’s Security Essentials software keeps you updated with its own virus definitions and helps you combat even the most complex infections. An additional bonus to install MSE is that it doesn’t take a whole lot of resources from your computer, like other “bloatware” anti-virus solutions do.

2. Windows Firewall Is as Competent as Any Other Firewall

It’s become a new fad lately to criticize every product Microsoft comes up with. While some of the complaints are well-merited, people often avoid using Windows Firewall because they hear it won’t really protect them. In reality, you can configure the firewall to do practically anything any other firewall can do. Contrary to many beliefs, Windows Firewall has the possibility to block outbound connections coming from a malicious application and monitor your network for anything else:

It’s all about searching. You can get to this window by clicking “Advanced settings” when you reach Windows Firewall settings in the control panel. There’s no reason anyone shouldn’t be able to have a secure system running solely with Windows Firewall. Honestly, though, configuring outbound blocks doesn’t really help you stop anything. If malware is making outbound connections through your computer, you should really consider getting rid of the malware. Blocking the malware’s access to the Internet doesn’t really stop it from hogging your computer’s resources.

On the other hand, you should really keep an eye on inbound connections, which often try to hook onto your Internet line and exploit your computer’s vulnerabilities. We can speculate as much as we want, but having Windows Firewall running on your computer is no different than using iptables on Linux. Both are very secure and difficult to exploit.

3. Download Windows Updates

Don’t listen to the conspiracy theorists saying that Microsoft Windows Update is an evil service that attempts to control your computer. While they might be right about the “control” part, it’s not like you’re going to suddenly see that you can’t go to a website because Microsoft is trying to “protect” you. The only thing that can happen is that they’ll pull an application from your system if it violates their policies, and that’s not going to happen until Windows 8 comes out. Still, they don’t need Windows Update to do that.

Downloading your updates is as important as running a firewall and keeping an up-to-date virus database. In fact, some malware has been rendered useless (like the “Conficker” virus) within a short while, when Microsoft patched up a vulnerability in Windows that it released as an update. People who refuse to use Windows Update might scoff at this, but it’s no laughing matter when you consider that many people also said that smoking isn’t bad for you.

It’s true that sometimes Windows Update might accidentally detect your Windows installation as counterfeit, but you can always ring up Microsoft on this. They’re always glad to assist you should anything go wrong on their end.

Are you annoyed by Windows Update forcing your computer to restart all the time? This isn’t an issue, as you can always configure it not to auto-restart after the update.

4. Disable UAC & Stop Downloading Suspicious Files

There’s a certain something that Microsoft should have never included in Windows: User Account Control. This intervention isn’t necessary in most systems, and certainly shouldn’t appear in home PCs. UAC basically is the pop-up that comes up whenever your computer wants to make sure you’re running an application on your own accord. It looks something like this:

Aside from disabling UAC, you can keep your computer secure using prevention. Download only from familiar sources and don’t download suspicious files. It only requires common sense. If someone links to a “.exe” file and says it’s a picture, don’t approach it. Someone links you to a page where you must log in to a website you’re already logged into? Don’t go to that page! These are simple and common tactics of fooling people, but as you grow more aware of what’s going on, you might prevent a major system catastrophe.

If you have a file you want to download and don’t know whether to trust it or not, upload it to VirusTotal and let its results tell you about it. The website runs the file you just downloaded through a ton of different anti-virus solutions and lets you know what each of them picks up. A few false positives might appear, but if many of the anti-virus solutions say that it’s an infected file, you’d best steer clear from it.

Redirect After Adding a New User in WordPress

Since the release of WordPress 3.3, I noticed something that was overlooked when adding a new user in the wp-admin. Before, adding a new user would redirect to a list view after the user was created that only included the new user. Now it redirects back to the full user list, though it’s actually trying to display just that one new user. The problem is that they seemed to have removed the functionality of the user search parameter from the URL string. It has been replaced with the usual s that is used in the front end WordPress search. I wrote a little fix that can be added to your functions.php file in order to bring back the old behavior:

With this in place, you’ll now be redirected to the user list page with only the new user’s account listed. You can even modify it slightly so that it opens up the user’s profile edit page instead.
