Manila’s home-based food scene is getting better and here are the ones better than restaurants:

1. AUNTIE MAY’S

Ginataang Kuhol, anyone? Cleaning kuhol (snail) is never an easy task. So when we got reconnected with @auntiemays we immediately ordered her ginataang kuhol! No questions asked! Just buy! ₱390 a tub of 1000ml. Need lots of rice because the sauce needs it! And you need it too!

Auntie May’s bestseller is their Angus Beef Salpicao cooked with minced garlic aplenty and special seasoning. An original recipe by Auntie May’s family made from Certified Angus Beef. They serve it with rice and also sell it in frozen packs with 3 individual sachets with a “how to cook guide”. It an easy prepare meal you can cook straight from the freezer. The salpicao was a pleasure to eat as well because the meat was tender and juicy. (₱390 -3 single serve)

Sichu Malatang : Finally, a Legit Hot Pot in Manila!

Sichu Malatang brings authentic, Sichuan-style street food hotpot to Manila and it’s absolutely worth all the hype! We loved the authentic flavors and we were surprised to hear that all sauces and soup bases are made in house. And while I can’t say with certainty that Sichu is the best hotpot in Manila it sure as hell deserves to be in the top 5. (fight me! 😝)

What makes Sichu worth it (in my humblest of opinions) is that for the freshness and quality of ingredients they use, the price is very affordable, and the fact that they have streamlined the process into what owner Jeff Li calls ”Fastfood hotpot” makes it convenient for people on the go. Add on top, the fact that they have put in great efforts into making it easy for takeout orders and delivery under quarantine, Sichu has made dinning on a delicious restaurant-style meal, simple for you to prepare and enjoy in your own home.

Bake Series: Sushi Bake, Nacho Bake, BibimBake…

Dalgona coffee, ube pandesal and now the newest quarantine food trend are these scrumptious and addicting baked dishes! From sushi bakes, nacho bake, bibimbake and even tako(yaki)bake, we’ve tried them all!

The deconstructed dishes are unlike how you originally eat your favorite fares! It’s typically cooked in a pan either baked or aburi style, then wrapped and eaten with nori (seaweed), chips, or lettuce. With all the bake dishes popping up, we’ve just been curious and had to check them out.

Here’s a list of baked goodies that we’ve tried…

Kurimi Sushi Bakes

Kurimi means creamy and indeed, @kurimisushibakes was spot on! Their house-blended kurimi sauce and another layer of cheese sauce makes their spicy UNI kani, spicy SALMON kani and kani mango sushi bakes unique in the market aside from their different flavors.

The spicy 🌶 sushi bakes were a hit for the adults because of the uni 😋 and salmon while the kani mango for the boys (they love mangoes!). Happy with the ratio of the toppings vs the rice too!
It was advised to consume asap but we did not need to be reminded because it was as if a storm has passed! But really, it’s better to consume while it is warm and freshly assembled on the nori sheets. Yum and tasty in every bite!
Order half-and-half for you to taste their other flavors! They will surely accommodate your request.
Also to note that, uni, salmon and mangoes (which are add-ons) are always fresh as they don’t stock up so better to reserve in advance.

@homecookingbykristina use fresh coconut cream from their Batangas farm for a satisfying inutak, a Taguig delicacy.

Sticky rice (galapong), coconut cream and sugar make up this kakanin (native delicacy) dessert. Imagine, a very creamy and smooth, ube-flavored bibingka with gooey and sticky consistency. A scoop of plain vanilla ice cream would be a great partner, don’t you think?

Hamilton Musical Review (Disney+ Movie vs. Theatre Version)

Awesome to watch the Hamilton Musical on Disney Plus performed by the original cast led by Lin-Manuel Miranda as the author and lead actor to celebrate the American Independence Day weekend.

Hamilton is a theatre hip hop musical about the story of the United States Founding Fathers particularly Alexander Hamilton. We watched Hamilton at the West End in London last 2018.

Here’s what we think about what we like about the theatre movie version vs. the live theatre production.

First Things First

This is one of our memorable dates with Rache watching the sold-out West End production of Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre, London last March 2018. We almost missed this but luck was on our side, someone returned 2 tickets and we immediately grabbed that opportunity even if it was out of our budget. I did not want to let this pass while we were in London.
