We love to have a beer down the pub, and we love to talk about games. Like early man combing some dry twigs with a bit of sparking flint and discovering fire, we worked out that if you put these things together you get a pubcast. And so we have done one, in August, at the height of the summer. Only it’s not. We waited too long and now the heatwave is gone. It’s tipping it down, and frankly being indoors playing games is the best thing any of us could possibly be doing, apart from having a drink down the pub and talking about them. I guarantee it (note: TheSixthAxis does not guarantee anything of the sort). This podcast may feature strong language (it does), jokes in poor taste (it does) and adult themes (or audio memes even). If you’re offended by any of that then we recommend that you don’t listen to it at all. You can grab the MP3 file here (right click to download). You might want to get it (when the RSS catches us) on the RSS feed, here. We’re on iTunes, when iTunes feels like updating. You can also leave us a review and subscribe there, if you want to be particularly lovely. We’re also posting on YouTube with audio-only videos if that’s easier for you to access, and with this episode embedded below. Finally, the podcast now appears on Stitcher as well. You can also follow some of us on that there Twitter, where we will probably be talking utter rubbish – apart from Cael who’ll be insulting politicians. We even had some cake this time to help line our stomachs, but it was at the end of the recording so perhaps we did that wrong. Anyhoo, we hope you enjoy!

Note, we recorded this before any Red Dead shenanigans had time to occur. If you’re not into living out cowboy fantasies, then you can consider this a safe space.

Another month, another pubcast. It’s a tad late in being delivered to you, but we’ve taken yet another tough month to task by having some drinks and putting the world to rights, with some major things going on in the gaming world for us to sink our teeth into.
Gamer entitlement, E3, and drunken rambling.

It feels as though we end up apologising in this intro every month. Who knew that the idea of drinking and doing the site’s podcast would prove to be so challenging? A big thank-you to Kris for putting up with this inane rambling every month while he wrestles it into some kind of listenable shape, and thank you, the listeners, for letting it anywhere near your ears. This month we started off with a serious subject while we discussed gamer entitlement and then slowly devolved into talking about other things while Cael does impressions of Jar Jar Binks and the Marvel vs Capcom 2 music. I said sorry, didn’t I?

What could be better than drinking [insert favourite beverage], heading down to [insert favourite venue], and talking about [insert favourite subject]? Nothing right? And if you think that’s wonderfully specific to you, this month’s pubcast is all about guessing what’s going to happen at E3. Some of that guesswork is vaguely based on the fact that we think we know about games, while some of it is based on the number of beers we’ve consumed. Either way, you can look forward to us hanging our heads in shame next month when we’ve got it all completely and utterly wrong.

But what happened to March?

I’ll be honest. It’s not exactly a hardship recording our pubcast, (though we still managed to skip the month of March). Getting a bunch of friends together, drinking beer, and talking about computer games is what the pub should be for, though this time out we were without the academic grounding of Steve to keep us above board. As such don’t be offended by the rude words that some of us use (mainly Cael), or get upset when Ade says he writes for The Sixth Access, and try not to get too angry when I confuse Dragon Quest X with Dragon Quest XI. I blame the drink.

We did manage to mostly coherently talk about the main events of the last couple of week, like EA removing Shadow of War’s micro transactions, and the announcement of a Spyro The Dragon remaster. Oh, and we got to be grumpy and talk about games we weren’t excited about, because everyone likes being grumpy, right?

It's still February right?

OK, OK, so the February pubcast is coming out in March. Blame the drink and the bad weather. You can imagine the hardships we’ve had to face by going to the nice warm pub, drinking beer, and talking about games. Still, it’s finally here, and the next one will probably only be a couple of weeks away so that’s a bonus right? Right?!

This time round we talked about the Switch’s one year anniversary, how gaming is seen by people outside of gaming, the best/worst snow levels in games and our top indie picks for 2018. We may have had one or two pints by the end.

Is Sony kicking indies to the kerb?

The first half of 2017 has really highlighted the shifting sands that indie developers face in trying to turn their passions into a living. The landscape is constantly evolving, from Steam’s replacement of Greenlight with a more direct system, Xbox touting numerous impactful indie games as (timed) exclusives at E3, Nintendo courting their so-called Nindies, and then Jim Ryan’s statements about a decreasing importance of indie games for PlayStation.

Today marks the release of Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure for PS4, Xbox One and with an updated version on PC, an indie platformer about the last word in parcel delivery… self-delivering boxes! We spoke to Prospect Games MD Andrew Bennison about the problems facing indie developers in this climate. You can listen to our 30 minute chat as a podcast, or keep on reading below.

Jim Ryan’s comments to GamesIndustry.biz that sparked our chat with Andrew said, quite plainly, that while “There was a time and a place” to foster indie gaming on stage a few years ago, “it is less relevant now.” Sony’s focus during E3 was particularly narrow, with a string of trailers and announcements for a short 60 minute presentation, which surprisingly omitted the likes of Gran Turismo, Knack 2 and PlayLink. It meant there wasn’t space for indie gaming either. “We have VR to talk about now, for example,” Jim Ryan said.

It’s a case of the public position starting to reflect the behind the scenes changes in attitude that I have long heard of and suspected. “I think the public statements come about because things are changing internally,” Andrew said to us. “I think that for all of the platform holders and for everybody in the industry, right now is an extremely difficult time. The market’s just flooded across the board and the sort of indie goldrush has really come to an end. The accessibility of the mobile market has been completely saturated now, the accessibility of Steam has been saturated.

“Every platform has had their Indie phase – Nintendo’s kind of having it now, to be fair. There are market trends that come and go, and so absolutely, some platforms are now more into indies than others. Sony’s flat out said it after E3 when people went, ‘Well where are all the indie titles?’ and they’ve gone, ‘Well, VR’s our thing.’ It would be very easy to have a knee jerk reaction and say Sony’s kicking indies to the kerb and they don’t care about them, but to be fair, they’re a gigantic business with a huge amount of responsibility and they also have one of the only VR peripherals out on the market that’s actually selling. They need content for that hardware to drive further sales.”

There is, however, a hint of irony to this shift away from championing indie games, as much of the game library for PlayStation VR and virtual reality as a whole has come from the experimentation and willingness to risk livelihoods on developing for these platforms. Ryan highlighted that VR is a key focus, and there were a number of VR titles at E3

Andrew said, “They’ve got to focus on VR, so maybe indies will be their primary content creators for the platform, but that cuts out all the indies who aren’t doing VR, have no desire to do VR or have recognised that VR across the board is not making anybody any money right now in the way that we all thought it would by this point. Why would I as an indie dev want to take that risk? Investing in very specialised hardware and trying to target a very niche target in the grand scheme of things, when there’s so many more potential options out there, with the biggest one right now being the Nintendo Switch. That is the most fertile land for games developers in the market right now. It looks great and there’s no content on a platform that’s selling out in every region across the world!”

Perhaps one of the catalysts for this shift is the change in personnel at Sony, with both Shahid Kamal Ahmed and Adam Boyes having been real champions internally of indie games during the PSP, PS3 and PS Vita eras. Both have moved on from the company in the last few years.

“We know that there’s been a lot of changes internally, with Strategic Content basically completely shut down and quite a few influential figures from that department having left ahead of time anyway,” Andrew recalled. “The guys who basically created the indie renaissance for Sony, who brought in all those indie titles, they’ve all moved on to different companies. Those points of contact have even gone.”

It’s not just a step away from highlighting indie developers, but also the fact that what was once a simple market with just a single set of hardware to target for Sony and Microsoft has suddenly become more complex with the PlayStation 4 Pro and the soon to be released Xbox One X.

“With Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure, we’re essentially just leveraging that extra power to make it run a little better. On both platforms it will still be capped at 30fps, but we’re able to do a bit more on those beefed up platforms than on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. […]

“The advantage of a closed system is you know what the baselines are. You know what that platform can handle, so that’s great, and I actually think that the fact that we have beefed up PlayStations and Xboxes in the long term is a bad thing. […] All of a sudden now we have two versions of every console; these are closed systems that are fragmenting to the point that all their advantages, in my opinion, are kind of slipping away. I understand why they’re doing it, to try and keep up with a rapidly moving technological scene, but I do wonder for the future of these platforms if they’re going to keep doing iterative upgrades, because as developers it can make our lives very hard.”

Emphasising what all of this actually means, Andrew stated powerfully that “Most indie developers at our level can only afford to work on one thing at a time. That thing has to sell or our companies are gone, we’re done. Most indie developers are passionate enough that our livelihoods, our lives are on the line with this. You had the Cuphead developers remortgaging their house, we [Prospect Games] have taken out loans, invested our own money into this and done friends and family rounds. There’s a lot riding on this. We need to see success, we need to see that we’re going to make a profit.

“If a platform is basically coming out and almost saying you are yesteryear, all of the people who could help you get on that platform are gone, then I’ve got to go where the money is, as with any business.”

Thanks to Andrew for speaking with us. You can catch up with Andrew and Prospect Games on Twitter @ProspectGames. Unbox: Newbie’s Adventure is out for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and being updated on PC today, with a Nintendo Switch release planned for later this year.

As you may be able to tell from some of our recent preview coverage, EGX Rezzed took place this past weekend. I was lucky enough to be there every day alongside Dave, while Tef and Jake made their way to the show for a short while as well.

At the end of the Friday, after we’d all seen plenty of games, we all sat down together and decided to record a podcast covering a few of our highlights. We were lucky enough to be given some quiet space to record the podcast, although it was oddly a huge room that you could fit a lot of people in. It was empty except for the four of us, which explains the general echoing quality of this episode.

Heading up the games was Sonic Mania, but we also covered the brilliant Octahedron, the hugely entertaining Oh My Godheads and the newly announced Battalion 1944. From there Jake delved into Steamworld Dig 2 on Switch, Dave talked up Tokyo 42, and Tef gave us his thoughts on Formula Fusion.

Break out the mince pies!

Christmas is always a good time for reflection, and as many of us relax on Boxing Day, it seems only right that we take the time to look back over what 2016 has been like in gaming. Sure, we’ve got the Review of the Year series going up at the moment, but a podcast seemed like it fit the bill just as well.

It’s a bumper crop of guests too, as I managed to squeeze in four guests to talk to me about their views on 2016, and pick out some of their biggest games of the year. Tuffcub freed himself from his busy schedule to discuss Here They Lie, while Dom found some time to talk to us about Final Fantasy XV. Dave returned to the podcast to tell us all about his love for Civilization VI, and Jake made his podcast debut to break down Titanfall 2. As for me, I decided to share my views on Uncharted 4, which may not be exactly what you’re expecting to hear.

Alongside all of that we go over some of the biggest topics of the year, like the launch of various VR headsets and the arrival of mid-generation consoles, and, of course, answer a few of your questions. We even address whether or not the podcast is making a full time return, so if you’re a fan, it’s probably worth listening just for that.

Do you feel like you missed something from this week’s press conferences? Well never fear, Tuffcub, Tef and I have got you covered, as the podcast briefly breaks its hiatus so we can talk about this year’s E3. Between the three of us we manage to break down everything from EA, Bethesda, Ubisoft, Microsoft and Sony.

It does end up as a fairly hefty podcast in length terms, but with so many games to take a look at, as well as Microsoft’s new hardware announcements, there was just an awful lot to discuss. We go all the way from Tef’s time at EA Play in London on Sunday to the general sleep deprived hysteria that comes with covering Sony’s conference on Tuesday morning. We did, however, not cover the PC Conference or Nintendo’s live streaming affair, so apologies if that’s what you’ve come here for.

It’s time for a change regarding the podcast. Unfortunately, Kev has decided to leave the show, leaving me as the sole regular host. As I doubt you want to hear me talking to myself all that much, the podcast is going on a brief hiatus while I work out what’s next.

It’s not actually the end of the show though, just a bit of a break. The podcast will be back in the near future, but it may be in a different format, or with a different focus. I might even try out a few different ideas. If you’ve got any thoughts on what you’d like to see on podcast 2.0, then please let me know!

As for this week’s episode, Kev and I were joined by my brother Carl. He brought with him his thoughts on the game Ben and Ed, as well as a desire to promote his recently renamed YouTube channel.

Kev, as a parting gift, brought thoughts on two game with him. First was Telepaint, an iOS puzzler with an interesting presentational style. He followed that up by sharing his experiences of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, a game that you can probably take a stab at the specifics of from the title.

Finally, I shared my view on the new German Trains DLC for Train Valleys, one of the game’s I’ve become fairly addicted to in the last six months or so. There is, of course, a round-up of the news, and the answers to listener questions.

After we changed things up a little with last week’s episode from Rezzed, this week we return to our usual setup. Alas, Kev wasn’t available to make the recording this week as he was too busy sunning himself in the Mediterranean, but I was able to find two great guests to bolster the numbers.

Firstly I was joined by our very own Dave, who had plenty to say about Dark Souls III and Eisenhorn: Xenos. The first seemed rather positive, while the latter didn’t quite impress in the same way.

Alongside Dave was Peter Chapman. Long term listeners will remember Peter as one of the original hosts of the podcast, as well as a previous Editor-in-Chief of TSA. He’s now working for Oddworld Inhabitants, and he’s shared a fair amount about their newest title, Oddworld: Soulstorm. He also told us about the time based mechanics of Superhot, a game I really need to get my hands on.

As for my contribution, I shared a few bits and pieces from Rezzed that I didn’t cover in last week’s episode, most notably event[0]. There is, of course, also a round up of the week’s news and the answers to your questions.

This week’s podcast sees us take a break from our normal format to stray out into the wider world. I was at the Rezzed gaming show in London this past weekend, and as Teflon was also there he kindly joined me to record a special from the press room at the show. This does mean that, unfortunately, the audio quality isn’t the best, but you can still here what we’re talking about.

It’s safe to say that we covered quite a lot in a reasonably short podcast, but highlights include a discussion on Tef’s time on the BAFTAs red carpet, a look at PlayStation VR, and our views on games that range from unusual titles like Reins and Burly Men At Sea to more traditional titles like The Dwarves and The Turing Test.

Kev and I were joined by TSA’s very own Aran for this week’s episode, so you should, of course, expect the news to be of a higher quality with TSA’s Co-News Editor on board. Most of the news talk actually focuses around the continuing PS4K rumours, but there’s some other bit mixed in to.

As well as contributing to the news, Aran’s been playing République for review, and he was kind enough to share his views on the PS4 port of the mobile game. He’s also watched Batman vs Superman, which lead to a spoiler filled discussion with Kev. They begin at the 23 minute mark and last until 46:30, and they’re also clearly marked in the audio.

Kev also combines with me to give a brief update on the world of comics, and I also share my views on the soon to be released Enter the Gungeon, which I’m a big fan of, mostly because it’s very silly.

As always we round things out with the answers to your questions, and also the news that there’s no regular podcast next week. Instead we’ll be doing something from the indie games showcase that is Rezzed, so you can look forwards to that!

Understanding MOBAs.

With the era of Lewis now behind us, we kick off our new epoch by talking about The Division at length. I’m joined by Tef and Dom for that very purpose, while Kev couldn’t make the recording as he’d already departed on an Easter break.

Before The Division chat, however, we talked about the week’s news for a while, covering the now debunked NX controller rumours, the possibility of a PS4.5, and plenty more. As for what else we’ve been playing, Tef has spent a bit of time with LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which does sound like a good entry in the seemingly endless string of LEGO titles.

Dom has been stepping back in time to playing Pokémon Omega Ruby and shared his views on it, which at least partly devolved into explaining Pokémon to Tef, before rounding things off by teaming back up with Tef to discuss the upcoming MOBA Paragon, which featured Tef schooling me on the finer points of MOBAs.

It’s the end of an era, as Lewis is moving on from the podcast. While this won’t be his last ever episode, he’s not going to be on the podcast as regularly now, leaving me as the final member of the original crew.

Tuffcub joined us to mourn Lewis on this special “in memoriam” episode, as well giving us his thoughts on Heavy Rain after he completed his PS4 playthrough, while Kev has been playing the programming based Screeps, which I feel we’ll have more about in the future.

For Lewis’ final contribution as a fully fledged host, he brought us his views on iOS title Handbrake Valet, which Tuffcub felt had to be an innuendo. Lewis also shared his thoughts on the latest season of House of Cards after berating me for not finishing season one.

There’s also a lot of reflecting back over Lewis’ five years, as well as an overview of the week’s news.

When royals collide.

You may have noticed that we’ve been very guest heavy on the podcast for a while, mostly because I like having a guest to round things out. This week is no exception, as we’re joined by long time friend of the show, Vaughn Highfield. He brings with him his views on the mobile game Merged, as well as general fun.

Kev is here for this week’s episode too, and he’s been playing a fair bit of Nova-111. He’s also been dipping his toes into Clash Royale, a game that I’ve been spending a fair bit of time with too. I’m not entirely sure what I like about Clash Royale, but it’s certainly got its hooks into me. I’ve also been the escape puzzle title Rusty Lake Hotel, which provides an interesting twist on genre staples.

Finally, there’s a substantial amount of news on this week’s episode, mainly around virtual reality and the decline of E3. It’s probably more than you’re used to, but it was a meaty week for once.

We finally managed to get all of the regular crew on this week’s podcast, and as an extra treat we were joined by TSA Co-News Editor, Tuffcub. He was actually lucky enough to spend a little bit of time playing No Man’s Sky, and was more than happy to share his opinions on what he played with us.

Tuffcub was also very interested in hearing my views on Dino Dini’s Kick Off Revival, which I got a look at during Sony’s Digital Showcase. I also shared my thoughts on a few other games from that event, including the bizarre Edith Finch, while Kev chipped in with his views on Nom Nom Galaxy, which contains some rather unusual soup recipes.

Of course we also have a round up of the week’s news, which Tuffcub prepared for us especially, and the answers to your questions.

Fans of Kev will be sad to know that he is, once again, missing from this week’s podcast. To be fair his excuse this week was rather good, as he suffered a power cut, somewhat limiting his podcasting options.

We did, however, have a guest in the form of my brother, Carl Lipscombe. Long time fans of the podcast will know him as Mini Mini Lipscombe, and he’s also the host of the Nerdface podcast.

As for his contributions to the podcast, he combined with Lewis to discuss Firewatch, and also helped me to relate our views on the new Deadpool film. As if that wasn’t enough, he went solo to discuss That Dragon, Cancer, while Lewis spent a little time on The Martian.

Finally, we of course had a look at the week’s news, mostly around the ZX Spectrum Vega+, and spent a little time answering your questions.

We’ve got a whole bundle of goodness for you in this week’s podcast! Although Kev was away, Lewis and I were joined by TSA’s Reviews Editor, Dom, to go over all of the week’s news.

From there it strayed into what we’ve been up to recently. Dom’s mostly been focussed on LEGO Avengers recently, which makes a nice break from playing LEGO Jurassic Park with his son for the thousandth time. He’s also been playing Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4, although once you’re onto the fourth Ninja Storm I somehow question how “Ultimate” said storm really is.

Meanwhile Lewis has been dipping his toes into the twee platformer Unravel, and enjoying the unique visual stylings of Firewatch. Finally, comic talk makes a return from a long hiatus, as I talk about American Alien and Invincible Iron Man.

Alas, there’s no Lewis for you on this week’s podcast. Don’t worry, he’d just double booked himself, and should be back next week. However, as promised on last week’s podcast, we were joined by a special guest for this week’s episode – long time friend of the show, Peter Willington.

Last time Peter was on the show he was still working at Pocket Gamer, but he’s since moved to the other side of the industry and is working over at Auroch Digital as a producer. He spent a little bit of time on the podcast promoting the games he’s been helping to created over there, and also shared his experience of the recent Global Game Jam.

In a fortunate turn of events, Kev had also taken part in the Global Game Jam, although working in Southampton, rather than Peter’s Bristol base. Both Kev and Peter told us all about the games they built, as well as the process of building them and Kev’s experiences of mentoring other teams.

As for me, I’ve been playing the title Hacknet, which is a hacking simulator in a similar vein to Uplink, but with more command prompt usage. On top of that we also delved into the week’s news and answered your questions.

While Kev, Lewis and I weren’t joined by any guests this week, we still had plenty of stuff to chat about. After our usual meander through the week’s news, Lewis kicked things off by telling us all about his time with Jonathan Blow’s The Witness, a game it sounds like you’ll be hearing more on in the future. Lewis has also been watching Mr. Robot via Amazon Instant Video, a show I’ve been meaning to get around to for a while now.

As for Kev, his focus has been on preparing for the Global Game Jam, which will also feature on next week’s episode of the podcast. Hopefully he’ll have managed to build something that works with his team during the weekend long game creation event. He also introduced Lewis and I to browser based game A Dark Room, which is very much worth trying out.

Finally, I’ve been playing Risk of Rain, a game that I really enjoyed despite playing a tiny bit of. Beyond that, we did, of course, answer your questions.

This week sees the return of one of our favourite guests, Vikki Blake. If you don’t know Vikki from her previous appearances, she’s a regular contributor for sites like IGN and Destructoid, as well as the head honcho over at GGS Gamer. She’s also possibly addicted to Destiny, a game that we discussed at length on the podcast. Vikki also gave us her thoughts on the PS4 version of Beyond: Two Souls.

Joining Vikki and me were Kev and Lewis. Lewis has been spending his time staring at virtual bears, or possibly watching The Revenant. They might be the same thing. Kev, on the other hand, has been playing the iOS title Lifeline. It sounds like it offers something genuinely different that’s well suited to phones, so I’m going to make sure I give it a crack myself.

Alongside that we also gave a quick overview of the week’s news and spent a long time answering your questions.

After an extended Christmas and New Year break, the podcast has made a triumphant return! Yes, we’re back and we’ve got a lot to say about Star Wars: The Force Awakens. From about the 28 minute mark this podcast turns into a Star Wars spoilercast, so if you haven’t seen the film yet maybe give everything after that a miss.

However, there’s plenty of good stuff before we get to Star Wars! We’ve got Dave’s views on Undertale, which do feature some spoilers unfortunately, and more of Lewis’ adventures in Fallout 4. It’s somewhat concerning how much time he’s spent in that game.

On top of that we, of course, have a quick look at the week’s news, coming in the form of VR Roller Coasters and Amazon Prime discounts.

It’s time for the final entry in our Year According To series for 2015. It’s a been a long old road, and I hope you’ve enjoyed all of the interviews. I’d just like to take a minute to thank everyone who took the time out of their day to talk to me, and to Teflon for helping me set things up.

In a small twist, this final episode sees Teflon interviewing me. We actually started things off by getting introspective and talking about the process of putting The Year According To podcasts together, before chatting a little about my visits to Rezzed and EGX, as well as the frustrations associated with breaking my wrist.

I do, of course, pick out a few of my favourite games from the year. I think it’s safe to say that long time podcasts listeners can guess at least one of them, but hopefully the other two are something a little different.

Mike wasn't alone.

We’re almost at the end of this year’s run of Year According To podcasts now. We’ve got one more coming your way in a couple of days, but rounding out our collection of developer interviews this year is Mike Bithell, the man behind Thomas Was Alone and Volume.

Both of these games got a fair amount of time in our conversation, although that did lead to spoilers for the ending of Thomas Was Alone at about the 14 minute mark. Don’t worry, I warn you in the podcast too.

We also spent a little time talking about the future for Mike, from growing his business by hiring a COO to producing Volume: Coda for Playstation VR. I even got to make a pitch for Mike’s next game, which was a nice change of pace.

As with everyone else, I got Mike to pick out a few games from the year. I’m not sure I was expecting him to pick either of the games he did, but they’re both excellent choices. It’s also worth remembering that this series wasn’t recorded in order, which may make my surprise at his choices make more sense.

Those of you who have been hanging around TSA for more than a year will remember Blair Inglis from his stint as a writer and, eventually, our editor in chief. I can actually remember being asked to take him under my wing and show him the ropes when he first started writing for TSA.

However, Blair left TSA earlier this year so he could go and dedicate his time to the game he’s in the process of building, Membrain. Over the course of our interview we spent a fair amount of time discussing Membrain, as well as his transition from editor at TSA to game developer at the studio he helped to found, Mystic Penguin. If you like the sound of Membrain then do make sure you vote for it, over here.

Beyond that we discussed Blair’s dog Frodo, made plans to party and chatted about his brilliant Vine and Snapchat videos. I also got Blair to pick out a few of his highlights of the year’s games, including one that he tried to convince me to buy.
