In this, the ending episode, this week we'll be looking back to the last days of the 80's, from Nov. 19 to Dec. 31, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

Hi pals, coming up on this week's episode of Go With The Heat Valerie Gordon returns, surprising everyone, to help her friend and frame someone else for murder in the final lost episode Too Much Too Late. This is the penultimate episode of all of Miami Vice and of This Week In Vice. Next week is the final episode of This Week In Vice and the last time we'll be covering the 1980's. For the second to last time, this wee we'll be looking back to Oct. 1 to Nov. 18, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

In news…

On Oct. 17 at 5:04PM, just before the start of game 3 of the Bay Bridge World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the San Fransisco Giants, a 6.9 earthquake struck the Bay Area. Centered in the Santa Cruz mountains and named for the nearby Loma Prieta Peak, the earthquake devestated the South Bay with ripple effects all over Northern California. With millions of dollars in damages, over 3,000 injured and 63 people killed in the quake it also happened on live on national television as the two local Bay Area teams were playing each other in the World Series.

As a Bay Area native, this quake is a major moment in my life. Dozens of buildings damaged, bridges and overpasses collapsed and millions without power left the area in shock for years and is still talked about by those who lived through the event. The one bright spot was on Oct. 28 when my favorite team, the Oakland A's, finished their sweep of the Giants to win the World Series.

In Music…

In the fall of 1989 there are only three songs that will reach number one on the Hot 100. Although all three are great, there's one mammoth song we have to talk about. The other two songs to reach the top spot are Listen to Your Heart by Roxette and When I See You Smile by Bad English. These songs are fine and all, but they're not Janet Jackson.

By a landslide the biggest song of this time period and perhaps the biggest song of 1989 is Miss You Much by Janet Jackson. From the mega album Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 which had number one songs from 1989 to 1991, a massive tour and even a movie, this was the first single released and immediately hit number one. The song, the beat, the dancing and the music video are all examples of Janet's greatness that would endure through most of the 90's.

In Movies…

There are only two movies that rule the box office of fall 1989. One of them is from last week with Black Rain winning two weekends in early October. But the biggest movie and dominating the box office for 5 weeks is Look Who's Talking. Starring John Travolta, Kirstie Alley, Olympia Dukakis and Bruce Willis as the voice of Mikey this movie was a surprise hit. To be totally honest, I'd rather watch Uncle Buck.

And that’s everything you need to know that was happening when Miami Vice was king. Be sure to join us on Go With The Heat at gowiththeheat.com for our last two episodes ever. I’d love to hear from you! Email the show gowiththeheat@gmail.com or follow us on Twitter @gowiththeheat. That’s all for this week, I'll be back one more time next week to say goodbye to the 80's. Bye pals.

Hi pals, coming up on this week's episode of Go With The Heat the team disappears and is replaced by a potential spin off of young cops in the third lost episode Leap of Faith. Since we only have 3 episodes of Miami Vice left and this time we'll be looking back to Aug. 13 to Sept. 30, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

In news…

On Sept. 22 Hurricane Hugo made landfall in South Carolina after spinning for days through the Carribean. A few days before Hugo struck Puerto Rico as a Category 2 storm but restregnthened to a Category 4 when reaching the continental US. When the massive storm cleared it left billions of dollars in damages and 61 people dead.

In Sports...

On Aug. 24 Pete Rose formally accepted to be placed on Major League Baseball's ineligible list after the fallout of the Dowd Report. The former baseball player turned manager is considered one of the MLB's greatest players of all-time and the accusations then factual proof of gambling, including on his own team, were a shock to all of baseball. Now 30 years later, Rose has yet to be reinstated and continues to live in the dark shadows of baseball history.

In Music…

Through the remaining summer of 1989 we have 5 number one hits on the Hot 100. Of course there are some familiar names inluding Cold Hearted by Paula Abdul, Don't Wanna Lose You by Gloria Estefan and Hangin Tough by New Kids on the Block which is a reminder it is nearly 1990 and music has changed quite a bit.

The two biggest songs from this stretch in time are Right Here Waiting by Richard Marx and Girl I'm Gonna Miss You by Milli Vanilli. From the album Repeat Offender, Right Here Waiting was a worldwide phenomenon and really just the beginning for Marx. He would release another 12 albums with Repeat Offender going triple platinum.

Milli Vanilli will have another number one song in 1989, all from the mega album Girl You Know Its True. Being a mega-hit is an understatement of the impact Milli Vanilli had in 1989. With 5 singles and 3 number one's the album went 6x platinum and spent 41 weeks in the top ten on the Billboard Top 200. Scandal aside, Milli Vanilli were legit superstars.

In Movies…

Its the middle of summer 1989 and there are 4 movies that reach the top of the box office. First up is the comedy classic Parenthood directed by Ron Howard and starring Steve Martin, Rick Moranis and more. Up next are Sea of Love starring Al Pacino and Black Rain directed by Ridley Scott and starring Michael Douglas.

Finally onto my personal favorite. Starring John Candy and written and directed by the great John Hughes is the fantastic comedy Uncle Buck. Its fun, heartfelt and has John Candy at his absolute best. This is what people think of when they think of the 80's, a time when the world wasn't so serious and political. Candy and Hughes, we miss you both terribly.

Hi pals, coming up on this week's episode of Go With The Heat the team struggles to take down a drug lord when a new super hero emerges in the city in the second lost episode Miracle Man. Since we only have 4 episodes of Miami Vice left and this time we'll be looking back to June 25 to Aug. 12, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

In news…

On July 19 United Airlines flight 232 departing Denver en route to Chicago crashed in Sioux Falls, Iowa. 111 died of the 296 on board which is quite remarkable considering the circumstances. Miracuosly all four pilots survived the crash and went back to work pilots after the crash.

In TV news on July 5 NBC aired the pilot episode for what would be Seinfeld. At the time the show was called The Seinfeld Chronicles and after the pilot renamed the show and yada yada yada became one of the biggest shows in TV history. For many the question you ask is if the show is, in fact, spongeworthy.

In Music…

In early-summer 1989 we have 5 songs that reach number one. First up is Don't Forget My Number by the much maligned duo Milli Vanilli. Up next is Good Thing by Fine Young Cannibals and If You Don't Know me by Know by Simply Red. Arguably the biggest song of this time period is Toy Soldiers by Martika but is not the song I want to talk about.

Easily the best song from this stretch is from one of the greatest artists of all time. For the blockbuster movie is Batdance by the remarkable Prince. What more could you ask for? A huge movie with a title song from an even bigger musician. Even the music video is amazing.

In Movies…

There are three movies that win the box office throughout the summer including Turner and Hooch and Lethal Weapon 2. Bringing back the entire cast and directed by the great Richard Donner Lethal Weapon 2 is one of the few times the second movie is better than the first.

But the biggest movie of the summer is the aformentioned Batman. Directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson and Kim Basinger the film was a tremendous success leading to many more Batman films and the much more important Batman: The Animated Series through the 90's.

Hi pals, coming up on this week's episode of Go With The Heat Al Lombard comes back to Miami leaving the Vice crew in the middle of a mob war in the first lost episode World of Trouble. With only five episodes to go I'm going to split up the rest of 1989 over these final episodes of This Week In Vice. This time we'll be looking back to May 7 to June 24, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

In news…

There were lots of minor stories in the news throughout this stretch but the biggest news came from China. On June 4, Chinese troops opened fire on student protestors in Beijing in what many call the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Since mid-April students and civilians had occupied the square and various points around the city. After Chinese Premier Li Peng declared martial law, soldiers moved in to remove the protestors. The Chinese governments confirmed death toll would be 241, however many groups estimate it much higher.

In Music…

In late-Spring 1989 and in this time period there are 6 different number one songs that top the Hot 100. Many of them are from artists we know and love from the 80's. These inlcude I'll Be There For You by Bon Jovi, I'll Be Loving You (Forever) by New Kids on the Block, Satisfied by Richard Marx. There are a couple newcomers including Rock On by the Young and the Restless actor Michael Damian and from the Beaches soundtrack Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler.

The biggest song from this time is Paula Abdul's second single Forever Your Girl. From the album of the same name the music video was directed by now famed movie director David Fincher and included a young Elijah Wood and Nikki Cox as backup dancers.

In Movies…

There are a few less movies at number one than songs during the 7 weeks we're covering for This Week In Vice. Finally dethroning Pet Semetary is the comedy classic See No Evil, Hear No Evil starring Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Next is the final movie in the Indiana Jones trilogy with Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and there never. was. another. Indiana. Jones. movie.

Third is Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, the second Shatner directed Star Trek movie in which Spock searches for God. Last on the list is Ghostbusters II which is a reminder that everyone needs to calm down about Ghostbusters reboots, remakes and sequels. Ghostbusters II is just as crappy as all the others.

Hi pals, coming up on this week's episode of Go With The Heat Stan and Sonny infiltrate a group of white supremacists linked to murders in the episode Victims of Circumstance. On This Week In Vice we're taking a look back to when this episode of Miami Vice aired, from April 30 to May 6, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

In news…

With the extended period between Vice episodes last week there was more news to cover than time on this show. This week we're going to go back to mid-April to look at a story I missed. On April 19, Trisha Meili was attacked in Central Park, New York and was eventually dubbed the Central Park Jogger Case or the Central Park Five.

After the attack 5 juvenile men where apprehended, charged and convicted of the attack. Through the rest of 1989 and beyond this case has been one of the most covered and perhaps the biggest crime story of the 80's. In 2002 the confession and DNA evidence from another man found the real attacker and the Central Park 5, who were wrongly convicted, had their charges vacated.

In Music…

I mentioned last time there was one song I skipped to cover this time on This Week In Vice. From the album of the same name, Madonna's smash hit Like a Prayer takes over the Hot 100 and keeps it for three weeks. Considered one of Madonna's best, the song was not without controversy. The music video, directed by the Mary Lambert, was protested by The Vatican and other religious groups. Like a Prayer endured the controversy and is still one of the best pop songs of a generation.

In Movies…

Speaking of Mary Lambert, Pet Semetary would be number one a the box office until mid-May so we go to the archives and holy smokes there's a lot to choose from.

There are some amazing movies hiding behind Pet Semetary including The Dream Team, a comedy starring Michael Keaton and Christopher Lloyd. Also playing is the legendary sports drama Kevin Costner, the third greatest sports movie behind Major League and of course, Bull Durham. Third on the list of classics is the Jean-Claude Van Damme scifi camp classic Cyborg. I don't care if a lot of people don't like Cyborg, in my house we love JCVD and everything he does.

Which brings me to the final classic to review this week. Starring John Cusack and directed by Cameron Crowe is the fantastic romantic dramedy Say Anything.... The story, the music, Lloyd Dobler, the movie has it all including one of the most recognizable scenes in movie history.

And that’s everything you need to know that was happening when Miami Vice was king. Be sure to join us on Go With The Heat at gowiththeheat.com. I’d love to hear from you!
Hi pals, coming up on this week's episode of Go With The Heat a team of vigilantes try to recruit the duo to their side in the episode Over the Line. On This Week In Vice we're taking a look back to when this episode of Miami Vice aired, from March 19 - April 29, 1989, when Miami Vice was King.

In news…

There is a lot of news to talk about in the month and half between Miami Vice episodes so lets rapid fire a few stories. On March 26 the USSR held its first free elections, selecting Boris Yeltsin. On April 15 96 people died in a FA Cup match later called the Hillsborough Disaster. The on April 19 47 crew members of the USS Iowa died in an explosion in the Number Two gun turret.

The biggest news of this timeframe was the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Prince William Sound, Alaska. The ship struck the Bligh Reef, spilling 10.8 million gallons of oil into the sound. Duo to its remote location, the spill cover 1,300 miles of coastline and 11,000 square miles of ocean. Numerous oversights led to the disaster including a drunk captain and the senior officer who was supposed to be in charge asleep in his bunk.

In Sports...

On March 22 goalie Clint Malarchuk suffered a life threatening injury after two St. Louis Blues players crashed into the net. During the hit a skate from Blues Steve Tuttle cut Malarchuk's carotid artery. Malarchuk lost 1.5 liters of blood and 300 stitches to patch the 6 inch wound.

In Music…

In this time period there are technically five songs that would reach number one on the Hot 100, one of them I will skip until next time. First up is The Living Years by Mike + The Mechanics. This is one of many number one hits from the band who makes constant appearance in Miami Vice.

Up next is The Look by Roxette and rounding out our rapid fire look back is She Drives Me Crazy by Fine Young Cannibals. The last song and the one I'll spend a little more time talking about is Eternal Flame by The Bangles.

From the album Everything the love song would be a worldwide phenomenon. The Bangles were perfect for the MTV generation and this music video played around the clock throughout 1989.

In Movies…

As with music there are four movies that would claim the top spot at the box office during this timeframe. First up is the unnecessary comedy sequel Fletch Lives starring Chevy Chase. Next, the Academy Award winning feature Rain Man reaches number one just after the awards ceremony and in its 16th. week of release.

But the best movies during this stretch are Major League and Pet Sematary. The sports comedy Major League starring Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Wesley Snipes and more spawned two sequels and is probably the second greatest baseball movie ever (behind Bull Durham of course). Last is the horror movie Pet Sematary. Based on the Stephen King book and directed by Mary Lambert. I'm not normally a fan of King adaptations (minus The Shining) but this one still scares the hell out of me.

On March 11 the FDA issued a directive to all Americans to throw out any grapes imported from Chile after two grapes where found to contain cyanide in Philadelphia. The FDA also put a moratorium on Chilean grapes being imported to the US. Many stores decided to pull all Chilean fruit from their shelves. Not without controversy, this scare has been studied many times and even had a lawsuit brought by Chileans against the FDA.

In Music…

During this time Straight Up by Paula Abdul would be number 1 so we go to the archives. Just behind Paula and our next number one by Debbie Gibson is a hip-hop classic. From the album Loc-ed After Dark is Wild Thing by Tone Loc. The song would peak at number 2 plus had an amazing music video that parodied the famous Addicted to Love video from a few years prior. This song has been used countless times in movies, everything from Uncle Buck to The Angry Birds Movie.

In Movies…

The Fly II's short run on the top of the box office comes to an end and is replaced by a Tom Hanks classic. Directed by Joe Dante and starring Hanks, Bruce Dern and Carrie Fisher is The 'Burbs. The comedy thriller would rule the box office for two weeks and is another reminder of how movies of the 80's allowed us all to have fun every once in a while. The eccentric neighbors in suburbia still has a timeless effect as all of us know these people in our neighborhood.
