Two sides of a stream: SaaS vs. Advertising

We’re intrigued by today’s news from Google’s I/O conference about how YouTube is making their beta live video service more available to certain select parters (those with more than 1000 followers and are selected through an application process). While some view this as a competitive threat to Ustream, we see this development as complementary and it certainly validates the significance of LIVE as the next wave in online video.

Since 2007, Ustream has built an open technology platform that allows anyone to instantly transmit live broadcasts over the internet, using anything from a simple mobile phone app to the most sophisticated digital camera. Many cameras like those from Panasonic, Samsung and Logitech now come with Ustream built-in. It’s literally “point, shoot, and stream live to Ustream.” On the back end, we’ve built the most scalable and easiest to use live video platform in the world. With more than 200,000 broadcasters and 80 million viewers per month, we have scaled out live video in a way that no other player has approached. We monetize this open platform with subscriptions to our Pro Broadcasting service (SAAS) that we sell to businesses and organizations of all sizes – from local churches, schools and non-profits to Martha Stewart, Dell, Microsoft and Sony. From company press conferences to CEO townhalls. In other words, Ustream is utilized across industries and is the unquestioned leader in live.

Unlike others in the space, our freemium SaaS model doesn’t discriminate against “content creators” vs everyone else. Nowadays, everyone is a content creator, whether they are creating content as simple as a tweet or as complex as a regularly updated Tumblr page. Similarly, anyone that wants to stream live video fits under that same umbrella. Consumer and business trends are quickly evolving toward this idea of universal content production and Ustream provides everyone, both individuals and companies, with the toolkit to broadcast their message using whatever business model they choose. Some of our customers use ads or pay-per-view to monetize their broadcasts, but most don’t. They simply want to reach their audience of customers, or fans, or users to communicate using the best live video technology available.

Because we’re a SaaS company and have a big vision for live video as a universal communications and marketing platform, we don’t care if broadcasters have 1 or one million followers; we open our platform to anyone with a voice because we see live video streaming as a much deeper phenomenon than just another advertising play. Our freemium service gives voice to breaking news and events and empowers citizen journalists across the globe to share their experiences, from the Arab Spring in Cairo, to hurricane Sandy, to the Boston Bomber tragedy. We can do this because the economics of a Saas business and our vision to empower everyone with live video tools have driven us to build the world’s most scalable, live video platfom. Our proprietary Ustream Network network can instantly handle millions of users concurrently, and we’ve already hosted single events with more than 8 million viewers.

We’re in an incredibly exciting market, with lots of ways to slice a massive opportunity. For any additional questions, shoot me a tweet at @bhunstable or email our communications director, Joellen Ferrer.

Yesterday, we at Ustream — along with millions across the globe — were taken in by the events that quickly unfolded as the second suspect of the Boston Marathon was captured. Last night, we saw heightened engagement from a scanner that surfaced on Ustream (http://www.ustream.tv/channel/ma-rt-9-window-cam), which enabled nearly 2.5 million people to share this live experience. At its peak around 8:15/8:30pm Eastern, over 265k viewers were watching/listening concurrently. Even more eye-opening was that nearly half the viewers were tuning in via mobile devices.

Ustream was created six years ago to help bridge the gap between the physical and virtual live experience, and we take pride in our ability to connect people to the things they value most. We highly value Internet freedom, and we’ve seen impactful citizen journalists utilize our platform throughout the years. Yesterday’s events were quite the validation of how things have quickly evolved — consumers crave instant gratification and social media has given them access and insight unlike ever before. Over the course of the last 24 hours, a number of news articles have acknowledged how social media has come to the forefront for consumption of information, particularly in times like this.

Our mission at Ustream is to empower anyone, anywhere with a digital camera to broadcast live and share their experiences with the world in real-time. This mission has put Ustream front and center of many breaking news stories, such as the Arab Spring, the uprising in Syria, Hurricane Sandy, and many other important events. We strongly believe live broadcasting on the internet is a force for open, transparent communication. If we are ever asked by a law enforcement agency to remove a channel for fear of endangering a public safety officer or the public, we would honor that request. In this instance there was no such request.

The police scanner that surfaced on Ustream yesterday was broadcast over one of our free accounts via our open platform. We routinely monetize these free channels as they are created, and we don’t proactively sell ads against them. Rather, their costs are automatically offset by ad networks. Ustream has processes in place to respond to any violations of Ustream’s Terms of Service (including copyright infringement notices) and any requests from the law authorities.

Where did you tune in yesterday?

For any questions or more information, please contact Joellen Ferrer, Ustream’s Communication Director at jferrer@ustream.tv or @joellenferr

This year’s annual NAB Show, appropriately themed around the metamorphosis of broadcast media, centered heavily on social media and consumer engagement. This year, I had the pleasure of hosting an NAB Info Session about the “Reinvention of Live Media,” where I got a chance to update the audience about what we’ve got in the hopper at Ustream.

We’re in the middle of a major shift in consumer habits, as social media has created the expectation of instant gratification and real-time connectivity. All of us in the broadcasting space need to adapt and be nimble, in order to stay relevant and innovative. I’m incredibly proud of the work we’ve done over the years to create such a robust, yet widely adopted platform to connect our global community to the things they care about. The Ustream Cloud Platform fuses live content with social media, providing the most engaging shared experiences for both broadcasters and viewers. Check out how “fans are rushing the stage,” now that Ustream has provided a means to bridge the gap between the physical and virtual live experience

We also put together a unique panel of our customers to chat about their use-cases, which I feel really helped to connect the dots between live video streaming and consumer engagement. The industries ran the gamut — education (Arizona State University), media (POPSugar), religion (Saint Monica Catholic Church), non-profit (explore.org), and sports (Premium Sports) — but the goals for each one all centered around connectivity and audience engagement. Watch it here:

Video streaming by Ustream

San Francisco Bay Area locals may recognize Lisa Kim in the above video stream, who was moderating the customer panel. She spent many years anchoring and reporting, most recently at NBC 11. Lisa spent some time with us at the NAB Show, as we created an all-day live show last Tuesday to give viewers a flavor of the showroom floor. From this, we captured a variety of content from companies and attendees, including product demos and interviews. Click the “Ustream Livepack” tab and choose from a variety of videos from the day:

Free desktop streaming application by Ustream

I also spent some time walking the floor throughout the course of the week, and I couldn’t help but notice several consistent topics of conversation: 4K, second screen monetization, and broadcast distribution were the most popular thought starters. While Ustream doesn’t necessarily play directly in these areas, it’s certainly something we, as a company, need to innovate towards. For example, TVs will continue to get smarter and sharper, and I see a future where viewers are seamlessly watching Ustream content in whichever quality will eventually overtake 4K.

As with any major conference, there are a number of events off the showroom floor. We sponsored the Technology Awards Luncheon, where the National Association of Broadcasters gave recognition to some of the most innovative people in the industry. NASA Administrator Charles Boldin gave the keynote speech and talked about some of their upcoming missions, including plans to capture an asteroid, bring it closer to earth, and launch a manned ship to it. Hear him talk more about this incredible mission (beamed in via satellite in true NASA fashion):

Video streaming by Ustream

Over the years, we’ve done some incredible things with NASA, including live video streaming their ‘Curiosity’ rover landing on Mars for over 3 million captivated viewers last year. Even more recently, Ustream enabled more than 7.5 million viewers to watch the Russian meteor fly-by live through NASA’s stream. You no longer have to be an astronaut to see the surface of Mars — and soon enough, you’ll be seeing an asteroid-capture!

What happens when you mix the two of them? An entertaining and educational live series called School of Pop.

The concept behind the School of Pop is to provide viewers with access to quality lessons on how to dress, act, and play, given by their peers. For their first-ever live Ustream, pop singer Mary Desmond will give a guitar lesson featuring music by Taylor Swift and Imagine Dragons.

Read more about Mary below, and don’t miss School of Pop’s new instructional series, premiering on Ustream tomorrow, February 27, at 3pm PST. RSVP now & watch LIVE tomorrow at: http://www.ustream.tv/schoolofpop

Free live streaming by Ustream

More about Mary Desmond:

Since Mary Desmond was 3 yrs old, she always knew she wanted to act and sing. She enjoyed music and started practicing at home every chance she could get. At age 3, she joined a music group, landed her first solo, and she has never stopped. Her first big opportunity, at age 4 was singing “Love Letters in the Sand” with Pat Boone and his grandson Ryan; she also made an appearance on Larry King Live at the same age singing “God Bless America.” At age 5, she appeared in a commercial for Disney Fantasy Princess and played extras for several films including “Yours, Mine, and Ours.”

She then began auditioning for local theatre and got her first big role as Annie at 7 years old. At age 9, she was in the ensemble for Evita and Brigadoon at the Regional Theatre, and then landed the role of Susan in Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. She was also a part of The National Broadway Tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. When Mary turned 10, she auditioned at Legoland California for the part of Emily in their holiday show, Let It Snow and immediately got the part. She has been performing as a part of seven different shows at Legoland, most recently as the lead in a new show called Lego Friends Live.

Three years ago Mary started playing with her band Fusion Beat, winners of the OC People’s Choice for the best youth band. Fusion Beat have now played at over 85 live performances including House of Blues, Disney California Adventure Resort, and the Del Mar Fair. She also continued to work at Legoland, and is currently working her 8th show playing Olivia in Lego Friends Live Holidays.

Mary has released over 31 videos as a part of Fusion Beat and 15 videos of her own on youtube. Her current video, a cover of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Getting Back Together” is all over YouTube and totally shows her voice, style and personality. Mary loves theatre, acting, entertaining, and of course, music. She is a great role model to her friends and family.

If we had to pick one topic that Ustream viewers can’t seem to get enough of, it’s undoubtedly bald eagles. Our nation’s bird never fails to entice, intrigue and keep viewers returning back for more. With love stories, treacherous falls and nest intruders, watching nesting eagles on Ustream is the real reality television.

This week’s Featured Ustreamer is one of our standout eagle cams: MNbound.com Solar Powered Eagle Cam. Located in south central Minnesota and broadcasting live on Ustream for about 3 years, the MN Eagle Cam is 100% solar powered and has a crisp, beautiful picture. The channel made news last year when one of the two eaglets fell 75 ft from the nest and died. A few days later, the remaining eaglet got stuck in the nest and major drama ensued. With nesting season approaching, this is the perfect time to bookmark the MN Eagle Cam.

Below, broadcaster Mark Wegscheid tells us more about MN Eagle Cam’s unique technical set-up, why they like broadcasting on Ustream and the heroic actions that saved the life of the stuck eaglet last year.

What is your favorite thing about broadcasting on Ustream?

The people you get exposed to! We have met absolutely the most wonderful people through this cam! We have a group of wonderful moderators from around the world and the viewers are great!

What makes your broadcast unique?

The first thing that pops out is that it isn’t a typical set up at all. The equipment is located in the middle of a flood plain surrounded by a river; the equipment cabinets are on custom-fabricated stands to hold the equipment above the water level when it floods. We have solar panels that are also on a similar stand, all custom-made by us in our shop.

The internet is a wireless connection that passes up to 50 meg through the link, allowing us to provide a crisp 1080 picture. The wireless radio is connected to a 2 ft dish that shoots the signal about half a mile from the site to the top of the Hutchinson Co-op’s elevator. From there, it is relayed wirelessly about 7 miles to another tower where yet another 2 ft dish is located about 150 ft in the air. It is then relayed from the tower to the server and to finally to Ustream. The camera itself is pretty cool, too! It is a mechanical PTZ that can zoom almost half a mile; the shots and clarity are incredible!

What’s the best live moment you’ve captured live on your channel?

The best and worse was last year when one of the eaglets fell from the nest and died. A short two days later, the remaining eaglet was stepped on by a parent and pushed into the rain-soaked nest where he became stuck. There were so many people worried about the remaining eaglet that we were issued a special permit by the Department of Natural Resources to go up into the tree and retrieve the eaglet to save his life.

Myself and a climber from the Raptor center went up to the nest and pulled the eaglet from the mucky nest. It was already infested with maggots and would surely have been eaten alive. We brought the eaglet to the Raptor center where they rehydrated him and nursed him back to health. Twenty-four hours later, we went back up to the nest and put the eaglet back in the nest in hopes the parents would come back. Another 24 hours passed and they had not returned, so we were preparing to go up yet again to retrieve the eagle and raise it in captivity. Literally 5 minutes before we were about to head out, we had Ustream up on our 54” monitor and as the sun was setting on the nest, the parents came back!

Everyone yelled and shouted and a few people even cried. It was incredible and I am sure these words don’t do the experience justice. It was all live on Ustream!

What’s the number one tip or word of advice you’d offer to other broadcasters?

Make sure you have good MODs!

Anything else we should know?

We enjoy every minute of it and couldn’t do it without Ustream!

Ustream is proud to announce the Featured Ustreamer series, a weekly spotlight on the broadcasters that are such an important part of who we are. Without our broadcasters, we would just be a live video player; they provide the amazing, unique and ever-interesting content that makes Ustream awesome.

For our first post in the series, we are featuring Owl Channel, three 24/7 cam featuring wild barn owls from Southern California. They’re currently awaiting four bouncing baby owlets, making this the perfect time to grab some popcorn and watch the nesting and hatches unfold.

Broadcasters Mike & Angela took some time to talk to us about why they love sharing their owls with the world on Ustream. Check out their interview and some amazing pictures below.

Ustream: How long have you been broadcasting on Ustream? Is this your only channel?

Owl Channel: We have been broadcasting on Ustream for 2 years now. We started out with one channel and now have three: www.ustream.tv/owlchannel www.ustream.tv/owlchannel2 and www.ustream.tv/owlchannel3.

U: How did you hear about Ustream? What made you decide to start broadcasting?

OC: We heard about watching live streaming on the Internet from friends and found Ustream. We started broadcasting because we wanted to share the wonderful and amazing footage we were getting with the world.

U: What is your favorite thing about broadcasting on Ustream?

OC: The fact that Ustream provides a means to broadcast live is terrific. If this was a business instead of a hobby for us, we would get a Pro-broadcasting account and broadcast commercial free. I have to mention how awesome the Ustream customer service is. They have been nothing short of outstanding.

U: How has broadcasting on Ustream impacted your community?

OC: Broadcasting on Ustream has enabled a vast online community to get connected using social media. The chat room enables people to communicate in real time as they watch the live streams. From there, external links are provided to share pictures, recorded video, educational information, etc. We ensure the chat is G-rated so people of all ages can enjoy.

U: What makes your broadcast unique?

OC: Our broadcast is unique as we are streaming wild barn owls live from our backyard. We have cameras inside and outside of the nesting box. We see everything they do around the clock. We see them eat prey such as mice, voles, gophers, rats and rabbits. They will regurgitate their prey as pellets and then break it up for nesting. The owls will lay eggs 1 to 3 times a year and then feed and raise the owlets until they leave the nest. We have witnessed many wonderful things here. We have seen a pair of owls meet for the first time, go through a courtship, bond and then have a clutch of owlets.

U: What’s the best live moment you’ve captured live on your channel?

OC: We have many priceless moments since we are live 24/7. It is amazing to watch them eat, lay eggs and fly for the first time. The best moments have to be when we see the eggs hatch, though.

U: What’s the number one tip or word of advice you’d offer to other broadcasters?

OC: The number one tip I have for broadcasters is get a good team of moderators to handle the social stream. We are very fortunate to have top notch team. The chat is always paused unless there is a moderator present to ensure the G-rated standard. The moderators answer questions and provide external links for everyone to follow as well as engage the chatters with interesting conversation.

U: Anything else we should know?

We named the first pair of barn owls that occupied the owl box Bonnie and Clyde. They were followed by the current pair named Roy and Dale. Our website www.owlchannel.com has lots of pictures and information about all of our owls and the clutches they raised and also provides a live streaming page made possible by Ustream. We also have a campaign to raise donations to keep the stream going at http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/watch-barn-owls-live/x/902599.

What can you expect from Owl Channel? All sorts of awesomeness. Here’s proof:

If you’ve spent any time on Ustream, you can probably tell that we’re big MMA fans. In fact if it were up to our CEO and co-founder Brad Hunstable, we’d probably just stream old UFC fights 24/7. You may not have known this either: Brad is a former military man. He and co-founders John Ham and Gyula Feher started Ustream as a way for their friends serving in Iraq to easily communicate with friends and family back home.

That’s why Saturday’s Buckley Fight Night is so special to us. Not only does it include MMA stars like UFC vet Tyler “Thunder” Toner and Bellator vet Cody Carillo, but it directly benefits something else that’s near and dear to our hearts, the Wounded Warrior Project. If you’re not familiar with the WWP, it provides aid and services to U.S. service members injured in war. While closed to the public, the audience will be full of current and former military members.

Buckley Fight Night kicks off this Saturday at 9pm EST. Get your ticket here.

This Sunday just keeps looking better and better for animal lovers — one of our favorite Ustream animal broadcasters, Bill Foundation has just announced that’s the day they’ll be kicking off (get it?) the first-ever Rescue Bowl.

Team Shelter Dogs will go nose-to-nose with Team Street Dogs while Bill Foundation ‘refs’ clad in sporty football jerseys call the plays. As a viewer bonus, a selection of dog ladies promise to glam up the sidelines as cheerleaders. Viewers can also expect half-time surprises.

Of course, all of this adorable action is absolutely free to watch, but those viewers who donate $5 via the Bill Foundation channel page will be able to vote for their favorite team. All donations will go directly towards the Bill Foundation’s efforts to match rescue dogs with their well-deserved forever homes.

Winning team will be announced on Monday morning on facebook. May both teams win!

Cards on the table. I’m a 49ers fan. A big one. A don’t-even-think-about-talking-to-me during a play type fan. Needless to say, I’m pretty pumped for this weekend. While my couch has served as a pretty good viewing station this season, I’d rather be watching the game from the Superdome.
That’s where all the best sportscasters are this week, including an up-and-comer named Dan Patrick. And he wants you to join him on his show. Ok, not at the Super Bowl, but sometime very soon.
All you have to do is prove that you’re the next great undiscovered sportscaster. If he agrees, you’ll get the chance to sit side-by-side with him on “The Dan Patrick Show”.
I can’t give you all the details just yet, but here’s what you’ll want to do if you want to get a head start:

1.If you don’t already have a Ustream channel, setup a free account by going to Ustream.tv and clicking on Login/Signup.

2.Start thinking about how you can show Dan that you’ve got what it takes to follow in his footsteps. Get creative! Re-cap a game from the night before, preview the Super Bowl, talk about why you think Kevin Durant is the best player in the NBA. It’s up to you, just think about ways to stand out.

Continue to check back here in the coming weeks for more details and rules.
Go Niners.

Late last night (early morning, local time) thousands of fascinated Ustream viewers looked on as Nina, a pregnant chimpanzee, gave birth to a healthy baby boy. The first-ever live streaming of a chimpanzee birth went off without a hitch and mother and baby are now resting comfortably under the watchful eyes of the entire world.

Nina and her infant will continue to live and stream from a private suite within the Jane Goodall Institute’s South African “Chimp Eden” for the next 30 days — at which point they will be slowly re-introduced to the center’s existing chimpanzee troop. At that point, the new baby will all also be named, although many Ustreamers have unofficially christened him “Squeak.”

The upcoming month is sure to hold many surprises as Nina and her son begin to bond. She’s already proving herself to be quite maternal, despite her being orphaned as a young chimp. (For more on Nina’s story, click here)
