We are going on a bug hunt...

I have been very excited about starting a new job today. I am going to work Mondays an Tuesdays as a crop consultant. Which is looking for bugs, disease and weeds on farms and then making recommendations to farmers about what to use and when to do it. For those of you who are newer or may not recall, this is what my degree is in. While I have a ton of experience doing this work in ornamental plants, I have not spent as much time on farms, although I have some.

So while my new employer joked about going back to work so soon, they take off the months of December and January, I replied I was quite happy to be digging around alfalfa fields on my hands and knees looking for cutworms. It was a gorgeous day, it got up to the mid 70's and it was above freezing when we went to work. So while jackets were necessary for the wind, it wasn't too bad at all. However it was dry, holy cow is it dry right now. We have had no rain this winter and lots of wind.

My boys cannot wait to go to work with me. When you think about it, it really it is a dream job for a six year old and three year old boy.

I am going to be taking my license exam next week to be a pest consultant and will pick up certifications in both agronomic and ornamental plants so I can work with folks in town which is my next step. This job is really an answer to a prayer, it will be steady income and set days which will help me work on my own business on the side, and one or the other will grow into more.

So this made me remember that I've been meaning to ask you a bug question. Let me first say, congrats on your new "digs" in your job. It is a dream job for all of you! :)

My question is, do you know when tarantulas do their migration and, if so, do you know the best place in New Mexico to possibly catch this? I knew where to go in Arizona (when I lived there... between Bisbee and Sierra Vista) but don't know where in NM. I've also forgotten when.

Any thoughts?
Thanks!

That is so great. I envy you. You are doing something you truly love doing. Congrats! Would love to hear some stories of bugs that are going on here.

I can't wait to hear about the first time you need to recommend an application of Malathion.

You'll probably be all "IPM" and hardly ever use chemicals, no fun. :(

@natalie, I don't know the answer to that question at all. I will see what I can find out though, I know who to ask.
@Backattheranch I'll try and take some pictures although my coworkers will wonder what in the world I am doing.
@TurfDad I will possbily prescribe Malathion at some point. Lorsban this week. IPM isn't about never spraying you silly rabbit.

Reminds me of a poem "We're going on a bear hunt....we're gonna catch a big one! It's a beautiful day, we're not scared!" I'll have to rewrite it for you.

Oh, PLEASE know that I was not directing my blog post at YOU- I was just saying that in general, if someone is ONLY blogging about their weight loss, that I lose interest, so I was assuring my readers that my blog wasn't going to become a weight-loss blog. You talk about lots of stuff on here, I promise I was not singling you out!

Congrats on the new job Nora! I would love to find a new job in the area where I'm moving to in order to be living with David. Can't wait. But for now I'll just commute the 30-40 minutes. Wish me luck!
