Starting April 22, fitting appointments are officially open at the Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop, with the first Titleist GTS Fitting Day on May 13. Clubs will not hit shelves until June 11, but your game does not have to wait.

Get Fit Before the Clubs Even Launch

At Haggin Oaks, you are not hitting into a net and guessing.

A Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop Perspective

Walk onto any putting green today and you’ll see it—lines, triple tracks, arrows, dots, Sharpie masterpieces… and plenty of golf balls with nothing at all. So what’s the right answer?

Should you use an alignment aid on your golf ball?

Like most things in golf, the honest answer is: it depends. But the science—and the real-world testing—give us some fascinating clues.

The Case For Using a Line

Let’s start with what the research says.

A study published in the Golf Science Journal found that golfers using an alignment mark improved their putting performance, particularly in terms of making more putts.

Why? Pretty simple:

It gives you a clear visual reference

It helps you start the ball on your intended line

It can improve your confidence over the putt

That confidence piece is real. Research and coaching insights show that when golfers feel properly aligned, performance improves—often tied to better focus and a more stable pre-putt routine.

Then there’s the data from Titleist. Their testing found alignment markings can improve aim accuracy by up to 35%, reducing variability in how golfers line up putts.

And here’s a telling stat: over 65% of tour players using Titleist golf balls use some form of alignment marking.

That’s not coincidence—that’s adoption at the highest level.

The Case Against the Line

Now let’s flip the coin.

Not all studies—and certainly not all golfers—agree.

Independent testing has shown that using a line doesn’t always improve results, and in some cases can actually hurt performance. One study found no statistical advantage overall, and even suggested performance declined on longer putts when players focused too much on the line instead of distance control.

And that tracks with what many golfers feel:

The line can become a distraction

It can slow down your routine

It can shift focus away from speed and feel

Even Titleist acknowledges that some players simply don’t like it—they find it hard to align properly or visually overwhelming.

The “No Line vs. Line vs. Stripe” Reality

A practical test from Golf Monthly compared three approaches:

No line

Single line

Full stripe design

The result?

Single line performed best

No line was second

Stripe (the boldest visual) performed worst

Why? Too much visual information can overload your brain. The stripe looked great—but required more time and attention to align, which subtly affected the stroke.

That’s a big takeaway: More alignment help isn’t always better alignment.

What This Means for Your Game

Here’s the Haggin Oaks takeaway—and it’s one we see play out every day in our Player Performance Studio:

Alignment aids are tools, not solutions.

They help best when they match your tendencies.

Use a line if:

You struggle with aim

You tend to miss left/right more than long/short

You like a structured, repeatable routine

Skip the line if:

You’re more of a feel putter

You get overly mechanical or “tight” with too many visuals

Your misses are primarily distance-related

And consider a middle ground:

A short line instead of a full stripe

A dot or arrow instead of a long alignment mark

Here’s the truth the data quietly reveals:

Alignment matters… but it’s only part of the equation.

Speed control, green reading, and confidence still rule the day.

You can be perfectly aligned and still miss the putt by three feet if the pace is off.

Final Thought from Haggin Oaks

If you’re standing over a putt thinking about whether your line is perfectly aimed… you’re already in trouble.

The best players in the world don’t just aim well—they commit.

So experiment. Try a line. Try no line. Try something in between.

A community golf tournament at Haggin Oaks brings players together to support the RememberAVet Wreath Project’s mission of honoring veterans through the placement of holiday boughs at their gravesites.

Some golf tournaments are about scores. Some are about networking. And then there are a few that are about something bigger.

The RememberAVet Wreath Project’s 10th Annual Benefit Golf Tournament falls into that last category.

On Friday, May 29, 2026, golfers will gather at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex not just to play, but to support a mission rooted in remembrance, respect, and community.

More Than Just a Round of Golf

At its core, the RememberAVet Wreath Project exists for a simple but powerful purpose: to make sure no veteran is forgotten.

Each year, volunteers place holiday boughs at the gravesites of veterans, taking the time to honor lives that might otherwise go unrecognized. It is a quiet act, but an important one. A moment of pause. A moment of gratitude.

This tournament helps make that possible. Every registration, every sponsor, and every foursome that tees it up on May 29 contributes directly to that effort.

Why This Event Matters

There is something different about a tournament like this.

You still get everything you would expect: golf, friendly competition, and time with friends, but there is an added layer of meaning behind it. You are not just showing up to play. You are showing up to support something that impacts people in a real way.

For many participants, that is what keeps them coming back year after year.

Some have personal connections to veterans. Others simply believe in taking care of the people who served. Either way, the result is the same, a community that shows up.

A Day at Haggin Oaks

The event itself is built to be relaxed, welcoming, and fun.

Shotgun start at 8:00 AM
Teams of four
$150 per player
Includes golf, cart, tee prize, and lunch

It is the kind of format where you can bring friends, coworkers, clients, or just sign up and meet new people.

Haggin Oaks is always a great place to spend a day, but events like this give it a different feel. There is a shared energy when everyone is there for the same reason.

Getting Involved

One of the best parts about this tournament is how easy it is to be a part of it.

You can put together a foursome, join as an individual, sponsor a hole or part of the event, or simply help spread the word.

For local businesses, it is also a chance to support a meaningful cause while connecting with the community in a more genuine way than traditional advertising ever could.

The Bigger Picture

It is easy to overlook how important remembrance is until you see it firsthand.

A holiday bough placed on a gravesite might seem like a small gesture, but to families, to communities, and to the legacy of those who served, it carries weight.

That is what this tournament supports. That is what makes it worth showing up for.

Join the Tournament

If you are looking for a reason to get out and play or a way to give back while doing something you enjoy, this is a great opportunity.

Friday, May 29, 2026
Haggin Oaks Golf Complex
8:00 AM Shotgun Start

Put together a team, sign up, and be part of something that goes beyond the game.

Learn how temperature affects golf ball distance, performance, and feel, and how a proper ball fitting at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex can help you stay consistent in any conditions.

If you’ve ever stepped onto the first tee on a cold Sacramento morning and wondered why your ball isn’t flying like it did last summer, you’re not alone.

Temperature has a direct, measurable effect on golf ball performance. And if you understand how it works, you can make smarter decisions, hit better shots, and avoid losing unnecessary distance.

Why Cold Weather Costs You Distance

There are two main factors at play when temperatures drop:

1. Cold Air Creates More Drag

Colder air is denser than warm air. That density increases resistance on the golf ball during flight, slowing it down and reducing carry distance.

That means even with a perfect strike, your ball simply won’t travel as far.

2. The Golf Ball Itself Gets Less Responsive

Golf balls are designed to compress and rebound off the clubface. But in colder temperatures, the materials inside the ball stiffen.

The result:

Less compression at impact

Lower ball speed

Reduced distance

In simple terms, a cold golf ball doesn’t “spring” off the clubface the same way a warm one does.

How Much Distance Are You Actually Losing?

This isn’t just a small difference, it adds up quickly.

You can lose about 2 yards for every 10°F drop in temperature

In extreme cold, studies have shown 20+ yards of lost carry distance

That’s the difference between hitting the green… and coming up well short.

It’s Not Just the Ball

Temperature doesn’t just affect equipment, it affects you, too.

Muscles are tighter in the cold

Layers can restrict your swing

Swing speed often decreases

All of that compounds the distance loss you’re already experiencing from the ball and the air.

What Happens in Warm Weather?

Warmer temperatures flip the equation.

Air is less dense → less resistance

Golf balls compress more efficiently

Shots fly farther

That’s why summer rounds at Haggin Oaks often feel like you’ve “picked up distance” without changing anything in your swing.

How to Adjust Your Game at Haggin Oaks

If you’re playing in cooler conditions, here’s how to stay ahead:

Take More Club

Don’t fight the conditions, plan for them. If it’s cold, expect to club up.

Keep Your Golf Ball Warm

Store balls in your pocket instead of your bag. Even a small temperature difference can help performance.

Expect a Different Feel

Colder golf balls feel firmer, which can affect your touch around the greens.

The Smart Move Most Golfers Skip: Getting Fit for the Right Ball

Here’s something most players overlook:

Not all golf balls perform the same in different temperatures.

Some compress better in cooler conditions

Others feel too firm and lose efficiency

The “best” ball isn’t universal, it’s specific to your swing

That’s why getting fit matters.

At Haggin Oaks, you can take advantage of a free golf ball fitting with PING Ballnamic, a data-driven system that helps match you with the ideal ball for your game.

Learn how to get fit here: https://www.hagginoaks.com/blog/get-a-free-golf-ball-fitting-with-ping-ballnamic-at-haggin-oaks/

A proper ball fitting can help you:

Maximize distance year-round

Improve consistency

Dial in feel and control

Final Takeaway

Warm air is thinner, allowing the ball to fly farther with less drag" class="wp-image-34883" srcset="https://www.hagginoaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/ChatGPT-Image-Apr-17-2026-02_15_05-PM-1024x683.png 1024w, https://www.hagginoaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/ChatGPT-Image-Apr-17-2026-02_15_05-PM-300x200.png 300w, https://www.hagginoaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/ChatGPT-Image-Apr-17-2026-02_15_05-PM-768x512.png 768w, https://www.hagginoaks.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/04/ChatGPT-Image-Apr-17-2026-02_15_05-PM.png 1536w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" />

Temperature is one of the most overlooked performance factors in golf, and it’s largely driven by the air your ball travels through.

Cold air is denser, creating more resistance and slowing the ball down

Warm air is thinner, allowing the ball to fly farther with less drag

That difference alone can lead to noticeable changes in distance, even with the same swing

Once you understand how air temperature affects ball flight, you can adjust your expectations and your club selection accordingly.

Next time you tee it up at Haggin Oaks, remember:
It might not be your swing… it might just be the air.

Every once in a while, a product arrives that is more than just equipment. It carries meaning. It tells a story. It connects generations. This is one of those moments.

We’re incredibly proud to introduce a very special piece now available at Haggin Oaks Golf Super Shop, the Limited Edition “Engineer” PING Hooferlite Stand Bag. And for us, this one hits a little closer to home than most.

A Personal Connection Woven Into Every Stitch

This bag isn’t just inspired by innovation, it’s built on it.

My son, Taylor Morton, is part of the engineering team at PING. Through his work designing golf clubs and building adaptive golf clubs for those with disabilities, he’s helping carry forward the same spirit of creativity and problem-solving that Karsten Solheim built the company on decades ago. The inspiration behind “The Engineer” is as meaningful as it gets. The design pulls directly from Karsten Solheim’s original patents, the very blueprints that changed the game of golf forever. From the iconic Anser putter to the groundbreaking i3 irons and beyond, these sketches represent the DNA of modern golf equipment.

Look closely at the bag and you’ll see those patents brought to life in a subtle, sophisticated silver pattern across a deep black canvas. It’s not loud. It’s not flashy. It’s timeless. It’s history carried on your shoulder.

For our family, it’s especially meaningful to see Taylor’s world at PING intersect with what we do every day at Haggin Oaks. It’s a reminder of how this game, and this business, has a way of bringing generations together.

Built for the Walk, Engineered for Performance

Beyond the story, the Hooferlite is one of the most trusted carry bags in golf, and for good reason.

This is a bag designed for players who love to walk, who value comfort, and who expect performance from every piece of equipment they use.

Here’s what makes the Hooferlite such a standout:

Lightweight Performance – Designed to keep weight to a minimum without sacrificing durability, making it ideal for walking 18 or 36.
4-Way Top Divider – Keeps clubs organized and easy to access while maintaining a clean, compact profile.
Comfortable Carry System – PING’s adjustable dual shoulder straps are ergonomically designed to balance weight and reduce fatigue throughout your round.
Stable Stand System – The leg mechanism is smooth, reliable, and built to handle all course conditions.
Smart Storage – Multiple pockets, including apparel, valuables, and rangefinder storage, give you everything you need without unnecessary bulk.
Durable Materials – Built with the quality you expect from PING, designed to perform round after round.

It’s everything you want in a carry bag, lightweight, functional, dependable, with a design that turns heads in the best possible way.

Limited Means Limited

Here’s the part that makes this even more special.

There were only about 300 of these bags produced nationwide, and just around 30 made their way to Haggin Oaks through the NGBA network.

At $239.99, this is one of those rare opportunities to own something that blends performance, history, and exclusivity all in one.

And when they’re gone, they’re gone.

There’s something powerful about setting a goal and then achieving it in the very place that helped shape your journey.

Morton Golf has officially announced the appointment of Sean Woods as the new PGA Head Golf Professional at Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, effective May 1, 2026. Already a familiar and respected presence at the facility, Woods now steps into the lead role with a clear vision, strong experience, and a deep connection to the Haggin Oaks community.

A Leader Prepared for the Moment

In his new role, Woods will oversee all daily golf operations at Haggin Oaks, including the Pro Shop, Club Repair, Cart Emporium, Tournament Operations, and Player Assistants. He will also work closely with coaching, maintenance, food and beverage, range, and marketing teams to ensure a seamless and elevated guest experience.

As an AGM Certified Retail Manager, Woods brings both operational expertise and a people-first mindset, aligning perfectly with Morton Golf’s mission to enrich lives one guest at a time.

Built Through Experience

A graduate of New Mexico State University’s nationally recognized PGA Golf Management Program, Woods built his professional foundation at some of the country’s most respected private clubs. His experience includes time at The Valley Club in Idaho and Knickerbocker Country Club in New Jersey, followed by a key role at Meadow Club in Fairfax, California.

At Meadow Club, Woods advanced from intern in 2021 to Assistant Golf Professional in 2022, a position he held through 2024. Each step along the way helped prepare him for the leadership role he now assumes at Haggin Oaks.

A Vision Years in the Making

Woods’ promotion is especially meaningful because it fulfills a goal he set early in his career.

“When I talked with Sean at graduation, I asked him where he saw himself 5 years down the PGA membership road. His answer was awesome. He simply said, ‘I want to return to Haggin Oaks GC and continue to learn and develop, then I want to become their next Head Professional.’ Well Sean, congratulations you are on that path, now continue to grow.”

— Pat Gavin, PGA, MBA, Professor / Director Emeritus, New Mexico State University PGA Golf Management Department

Gavin also highlighted the qualities that set Woods apart:

“Sean is a very enthusiastic individual with a great personality. I feel he is very honest and strives to be the best at everything he attempts. It is always a pleasure to be around Sean and see how people respect him. I know Sean is excited, honored, and ready for this next chapter.”

Continuing a Legacy of Excellence

Woods becomes just the fourth Head Golf Professional in the storied history of Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, joining a distinguished lineage of leaders who have shaped one of Northern California’s premier public golf facilities.

This rare continuity reflects the culture and long-standing commitment to excellence that define Haggin Oaks.

Ken Morton Sr., CEO of Morton Golf, expressed strong confidence in Woods’ leadership:

“The history, traditions, culture and leadership over the 94 years of the Haggin Oaks Golf Facility rivals most any municipal golf operation in the nation. Sean’s dedication for the sport of golf, his ability to play the game of golf, his business acumen that he has gained from his education and his on-the-job experience more than qualify him to be the next Head Professional at Haggin Oaks.”

He continued:

“Besides his outstanding abilities and exceptional skill sets, he is the perfect match to the ideals of the vision, mission and standards of Morton Golf’s Company culture. He is extremely friendly and has a strong passion to satisfy the needs of the golfing public. Congratulations to Sean Woods, Haggin Oaks could not be in better hands for its future.”

Looking Ahead

As he steps into this leadership role, Sean Woods brings not only experience and professionalism, but also a genuine passion for the game and the community he serves.

His journey reflects dedication, vision, and a deep connection to Haggin Oaks, making this next chapter not just a promotion but a meaningful milestone for both Woods and the facility.

The Alister MacKenzie Golf Course in Sacramento once again proved to be a worthy championship venue as the 3rd Annual AJGA Sacramento Junior Championship, presented by the Morton Golf Foundation, welcomed 96 families to Sacramento from April 2–5, 2026. The Morton Golf Foundation Hosted at the storied Haggin Oaks Golf Complex, the tournament, an AJGA event, showcased some of the best junior golfers in the country across its Boys and Girls divisions, delivering drama, birdies, and an unforgettable playoff finish.

Boys Division: Woolworth Wins in a Thriller

If you were looking for drama, the Boys Division delivered in spades. Drew Woolworth of Lake Oswego, Oregon, a Class of 2026 standout, emerged victorious after one of the most competitive finishes the tournament has seen, winning in a two-hole playoff over Theodore Snyder of Gig Harbor, Washington.

Both Woolworth and Snyder finished at 13-under-par 203 through 54 holes, with Woolworth ultimately prevailing in the playoff. AJGA Woolworth’s final-round 66 was the spark that ignited the dramatic conclusion, while Snyder matched him stroke-for-stroke with his own 66 in the final round, setting up the tiebreaker.

This wasn’t Woolworth’s first rodeo at this event either. He’s been a consistent force in junior golf in the Pacific Northwest, and this title will be a major highlight heading into his college career.

A special shout-out goes to Jacob Burnett of Roseville and Landon Abalateo of Fair Oaks, two local Northern California players who represented the region with pride, both finishing inside the top 10. Abalateo’s second round of 65 was one of the low rounds of the entire tournament.

Young guns Zude Xu (Class of 2028) and Richard Ding (Class of 2029) also turned heads, their performances at such a young age signal bright futures on the AJGA circuit.

While the Boys Division needed a playoff to crown a champion, the Girls Division belonged to one player from start to finish. Madeleine Conser of Portland, Oregon (Class of 2027) put on an absolute clinic, firing three consecutive rounds in the 60s to win the Girls title at a stunning 16-under-par 200, a three-shot margin over the field.

Conser posted rounds of 67-67-66, finishing at -16 (200), three shots clear of Emma Wang of Palo Alto, California, and Victoria Cui of Atherton, California, who tied for second at -13 (203). AJGA

Conser’s consistency was remarkable, her scoring average of 66.7 per round was a dominant performance on a course that demands precision. Her closing 66 in the final round removed any doubt.

Top 10 Girls Division Final Leaderboard:

Pos.

Player

Hometown

Rounds

Total

1

Madeleine Conser

Portland, Ore.

67-67-66

200 (-16)

T2

Emma Wang

Palo Alto, Calif.

68-68-67

203 (-13)

T2

Victoria Cui

Atherton, Calif.

70-66-67

203 (-13)

T4

Inseoul Jiamanukoonkit

San Diego, Calif.

68-66-71

205 (-11)

T4

Niuniu Zhao

Woodinville, Wash.

66-68-71

205 (-11)

6

Kelly Zhang

Hillsborough, Calif.

73-67-66

206 (-10)

T7

Anita Lumpongpoung

Sacramento, Calif.

72-69-67

208 (-8)

T7

Alice Ziyi Zhao

Irvine, Calif.

69-69-70

208 (-8)

T9

Hailey Kim

Simi Valley, Calif.

70-71-68

209 (-7)

T9

Juliet Oh

Diamond Bar, Calif.

69-70-70

209 (-7)

T9

Samantha Chiou

Orinda, Calif.

71-66-72

209 (-7)

Local Sacramento favorite Anita Lumpongpoung, a Class of 2028 player from right here in Sacramento, earned a well-deserved T7 finish, thrilling the home crowd. Kelly Zhang of Hillsborough (Class of 2030) was perhaps the biggest revelation, posting a closing 66 to climb to 6th place, an outstanding result for one of the youngest players in the field.

The international flavor of the Girls Division was also on full display, with players representing Thailand, China, and Canada competing at the top of the leaderboard.

The Bigger Picture: More Than Just a Tournament

This event represents more than just competition, it’s about opportunity, growth, and supporting the next generation of golfers. Morton Golf Foundation The Morton Golf Foundation’s partnership with the AJGA continues to provide a premier stage for junior golfers to test their games at one of California’s most historic public golf facilities.

The Alister MacKenzie Golf Course, designed by the same architect who created Augusta National, is a fitting venue for junior golfers dreaming of competing at the highest levels one day. This year’s tournament proved once again why Sacramento has become a marquee stop on the AJGA calendar.

Congratulations to Drew Woolworth and Madeleine Conser on their championships, and to every junior golfer who competed this week. The future of golf is in very good hands.

A Championship Made Possible by Extraordinary Supporters

None of this happens without the generosity of those who believe in the mission. We want to take a moment to recognize the incredible sponsors and supporters who make the Sacramento Junior Championship possible year after year.

A very special thank you goes to Barbara Allario, longtime Morton Golf Foundation board member and one of the most dedicated champions this event has ever had. Barbara’s incredibly generous support is at the heart of why 96 junior golfers from around the world were able to compete on this stage. Without her commitment, this event simply doesn’t exist. We are deeply grateful.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our key sponsors and supporters:

A Standing Ovation for Our 80 Volunteers

We simply cannot say this loudly enough, THANK YOU to the 80 incredible Morton Golf Foundation volunteers who gave their time, energy, and enthusiasm to make this the best AJGA event yet!

From early morning setup to the final putt dropping on Sunday, our volunteers were everywhere, directing players, supporting families, and keeping everything running with a smile. Many worked multiple shifts and came back the next day eager to do it all over again. That kind of passion and dedication is what sets this tournament apart and makes Sacramento’s junior golf community something truly special.

You are the backbone of this event, and we could not do any of this without you. See you all again in 2027!

See You in 2027!

This tournament is a testament to what happens when a community rallies around a shared passion. From the world-class juniors competing their hearts out, to the AJGA staff and every volunteer who gave their time, this event is a celebration of golf, community, and the future.

We look forward to seeing you at the 4th Annual AJGA Sacramento Junior Championship, March 25–28, 2027. Mark your calendars, bring your family, and come cheer on the next generation of golf stars right here in Sacramento.

Hope to see you there!
