This weekend is the Spring Eharts Market Weekend.

I am so excited to announce that I have relaunched my Patreon Community as of this week. I have moved the past three months worth of coloring pages from the color club over to here and there is now two tiers that you can join. The Free Tier will be where I share any shop updates as well as when new videos go live over on Youtube.

I am really looking forward to sharing more here. For the Studio Friend tier I will post occasionally with little snippets from the studio and from my day working on the farm. I really want to share more of where I find my inspiration.

I have really been thinking about what I want to do with my business and what direction I want to go with products and such. I have decided that I am going to discontinue most of the physical products that I create in my studio. As of this posting all products that physically ship from my studio are on sale. Once they are gone I will not be making these items. I want to be able to free up more time to create and not produce so much. I will still have products in my shop but I am switching over to a Print on Demand system. I have found a couple of companies that I like the quality of their products and I will be using them from now on to produce my items.

I am thinking about doing a limited edition sticker bundle that I will launch on a pre-order basis and I am thinking about releasing them every 2 months. Since these will only be available during the preorder time they will be limited.

I miss the days before social media dictated my creativity. I remember a time when I created purely for the fun of it—filling sketchbooks with drawings meant only for me, crafting gifts for friends without worrying about marketability, and immersing myself in projects without the pressure of monetization. Art was my escape, my sanctuary, my way to unwind from daily life.

But somewhere along the way, I lost that freedom. I became fixated on making things that would sell, that would fit into a niche, that would appeal to an audience. And while there’s nothing wrong with turning creativity into a career, I now realize that I’ve niched down so much that I’ve lost a part of myself in the process.

I am more than just an artist or illustrator—I am in a way a Creative Magpie. I am drawn to many forms of creativity: knitting, crocheting, journaling, writing, painting, and drawing. I love learning and sharing new techniques, and I refuse to be confined to just one artistic identity. Creativity is about exploration and joy, not algorithms and perfection.

I don’t know if it is because of all the crazy weather (I has snowed twice this month already, Georgia gets snow like this about once a decade) we have had this month or if it is because we have had major changes at home, but I have been super distracted this month. I don’t feel like I have gotten anything accomplished or actually completed anything. My brain has been in overdrive and I have had tons of ideas, but my focus has really just been all over the place.

I set out with goals for this quarter on what I wanted to focus on and the steps that I needed to get them completed. I have been working on the quarter year system for a while and it really does help me to get more done in a shorter amount of time. My goals for this quarter are to write 2-3 blog post a week, upload a new video to my Youtube channel once a week and add a new piece of work to my portfolio every week. I have accomplished the first two pretty much but when I sit down to work on creating something new I just feel like I am hitting a brick wall. Like everything I should be doing is not good enough. Or I still and scroll social media way too much. I am not posting on Instagram this month to help give myself a break in feeling like everything I create has to be worthy of posting. I really want to let myself just create for me. I took both instagram and Facebook apps off of my phone and It has helped. I still have the IG app on my iPad so that I don’t get locked out of my accounts.

The reason that I am sharing this is that even people who have been doing this creative business life for as long as I have struggle with comparison and imposter syndrome. I don’t really think it ever goes away. So don’t beat yourself up. I know that I have let imposter syndrome stop me from so much over the years and this year I am really working to step out of mu comfort zone and do things that I have let fear hold me back from for so long.

I have always wanted to enter the Uppercase Magazine Surface Pattern Designers Guidebook since it started and I have always let the thoughts that I wasn’t good enough stop me. Well this year I entered. I did It. Now it is up to the judges to see if I get in. This is a quote from the Uppercase site about this guide if you are unfamiliar with it:

“The sixth edition of the UPPERCASE Surface Pattern Design Guide will be published inside UPPERCASE issue #65 (April-May-June 2025). It will feature the best in up-and-coming and seasoned surface pattern designers. Being part of the guide will expose your work to an engaged and active readership of art and design buyers, potential clients, collaborators and consumers. Entrants will also be considered for many professional licensing and learning opportunities—including a Fabric Collection with Windham Fabrics.”

I will find out in March if I will be included. The top 100 will be published. This is another reason that I am working updating my portfolio, They will be looking at my portfolio as well as my Instagram for consideration not just what I submitted.

I have also been trying to create things just for fun. I started using a couple of the prompts from Ohn Mar Win’s 14 day challenge to try to get back in to my sketchbook. The first two pages above are from the challenge. The third is from a zoom drawing session with my friend April @MonkeyMintaka on Instagram. She hosts a drawing session once a month on her Patreon community.

We had the January session yesterday afternoon. It was all about drawing interiors. I used negative space drawing as a warm up for the first drawing. There is a time limit on each image and it really helps me learn to see the details and work quickly. I also love the chatty aspect of the call. She had picked 9 different images of interiors and we could choose what we wanted to draw from each image. It was so fun at the end to see how different everyones turned out even though we were all using the same references.

Later that evening I was still feeling super inspired to draw and so I went on Pinterest and found an image that I have saved to one of my boards and drew it . I liked working with just an outline and no color.

I also want to share a video that Catherine Kay posted about having a breakthrough that really resonated with me. We need to let ourselves be bored.

I have been guilty of trying to monetize everything I did over the years. Some things worked out great but others didn’t and then the whole enjoyment of the making just went away. On the other hand I sometimes feel guilty for just doing something for the fun of it because I feel like I should be working all the time.

Drawing and painting has always been a love of mine and it has been how I have made most of my income for the past 6 years, but sometimes I feel like the joy is not as big of a part of it as it once was. I still love it and don’t get me wrong I don’t think I will every stop drawing. It is just I really need to get back to creating things for me and not just to post on social media. I know that it feel like you have to keep feeding the machine that is social media or you will lose the followers, but I also thinking that keeping creating in this way can drain all the life out of the process.

I am not trying to be down here are all. What I really want you to know it that it is ok to do something just for you, or to make something to give as a gift and brighten someones day. Everything you do doesn’t have to make money. It can just be a way to create a little joy.

I hope you take a little time to create something just for you this week. Start a project that is all about just enjoying the process and not about making money. It is ok to have a hobby.

When you create work for clients most of the time you are given a “Design Brief” this is what tells you about the job and what the client needs accomplished by the work. If the client doesn’t have a brief most of the information that is on a brief can be gathered durning the initial client call. I will then plug in the information that the client gives me into a brief format so that I can have the information need to create the project. This year I decided to create a few client briefs for pretend clients for different types of design projects.

They first one that I am working on is:

Design Brief: Woman-Owned Bakery in Cody, WY

Name of the Bakery: "Bunkhouse Bakes"

Business Overview: Bunkhouse  Bakes is a woman-owned bakery in Cody, WY, offering a mix of artisanal bread, pastries, cakes, and other baked delights. The bakery emphasizes locally sourced ingredients, a cozy atmosphere, and fostering a sense of community in this small town.

Target Audience:

1. Local residents looking for fresh, high-quality baked goods.

2. Tourists exploring Cody, WY, who want a taste of authentic, small-town baking.

3. Event planners seeking unique, handmade cakes and desserts.

Brand Personality:

- Warm and welcoming - Wholesome and natural

- Rustic with a touch of elegance - Rooted in community and sustainability

Logo Design Elements:

Primary Imagery:

Additional Notes:

The logo should be versatile, working well on everything from shop signage and packaging to social media and merchandise. It should exude warmth, hinting at both the quality of the baked goods and the friendly spirit of its owner and staff.

I am currently in the rough sketching phase of the project and I have started to create a few different versions for the logo. During this phase of the process I work in black and white to help keep the color choices from distracting from the decision process. Also working in black and white helps speed up the design process because there is no choices to make about what color looks best where.

For the first design that I worked on I wanted to incorporate the wagon wheel and a whisk. Trying to balance the three elements and not make it too heavy on one side. The second one added in an illustration of Heart Mountain which is located in between Cody and Powell, WY. This can be a way to invoke the mountains that are in the area in a more specific way. and it is a play on the design elements mentioned in the brief.

When I am working with a client I really like to create more than just a couple of ideas because it really helps me to flesh out the design and sometimes a design takes a different path that is much better than the first. For the 3rd design I decided to keep the mountain idea but create a more generic design. I flattened out the curve of the name and contained the word bakes in the center of the rolling pin. For the forth one I wanted to incorporate a loaf of bread but not make it a major focal point, I wanted it to be there but in a more subtle way. so I plan on using a lighter color to keep it in the background and have this color be mimicked in the tagline that is contained in the rolling pin.

The next step on this project will be to create a color palette and start working on these designs in full color. I will be back here with another post all about choose colors based on the information contained in the brief.

Being an artist often means wearing multiple hats. You’re not just the creator of your work; you’re also the marketer, the accountant, the salesperson, and sometimes even the IT department! Managing the business side of your art can feel overwhelming, but with the right mindset and tools, you can thrive both creatively and financially. I want to share some actionable tips and strategies to help you balance art and business.

First things first, you’re not “just an artist”—you’re an entrepreneur. Think of your art as a product or service that solves a problem, evokes emotion, or brings beauty to people’s lives. Adopting this perspective can help you approach your art career with more structure and intention.

Embrace the entrepreneurial mindset and start seeing yourself as a small business owner. This mindset shift can open doors to opportunities you might not have considered before.

Running the business side of art requires organization. Whether it’s tracking expenses, managing client relationships, or planning your next exhibition, having systems in place can save you time and reduce stress. Getting organized with tools and systems can really help you, no matter if you are running your business full time or as a side hustle.

Some of the tools that I used in my business are:

For accounting I use a good old Excel/Numbers spreadsheet. I use a check registry format where I add the incoming monies and deduct the expenses.

For keeping up with my daily tasks I use Asana I really like using this because I can create a board for each of my projects and add the deadlines to each section of them and they are automatically added to my task lists.I use the free version and I have used it for the past 3 years and love it.

I really like using Milanote for a visual way of planning my projects. I can create mood boards and choose color samples and add images that fit the theme. It really has helped me be able to keep everything in one place for each project. If you haven’t tried Milanote it is free to use. I ahem a referral link that helps me get more storage. My inventory tracking systems is pretty simple too. I used Excel/Numbers and at the end of the month I will deduct any sales and if I make new products I add them once they are going on the shelves.

One of the best things that I have implemented is setting aside one day a week to focus on admin tasks. Think of it as your “business day.” I do this on Mondays and it really helps me get the big things off my list at the beginning of the week and I can focus on the more creative things the rest of the week.

Another very important aspect of your business it to understand your finances.

Money matters can be daunting, but they’re essential to your success. You can start by understanding your income streams (art sales, commissions, licensing, etc.) and your expenses (materials, studio rent, marketing, etc.).

The next thing that can help you is to open a dedicated bank account for your art business to keep things clean and professional. This really helps because you are able to separate your personal and business monies. I have a great local bank and they helped me get 3 different account set up for my business, I have one that it attached to a debit card that I used to purchases and 1 that I can transfer a portion of each sale into for taxes and the other is set aside for business capital to help me save for larger purchases. Make sure to track your monthly cash flow to spot trends and spot areas that could use improvement.

In today’s digital world, your online presence is your storefront. Make it easy for people to find you, learn about your art, and buy from you. You can get started with platforms like Etsy and build your business from there onto your own website. When you have tour own website you can not only sell your products to your customers you can share your portfolio and so much more.

I got my start on Etsy back in 2008 and I have never looked back. I currently have a shop there as well as my own website. I also sell digital products on Gumroad as well as my website and Etsy.

One of the most valuable things that can help you from the start is an email list to stay in touch with customers. You don’t have to worry about an algorithm when you know that you can send an email out and it goes to all the people that really want to keep connected to you. You can create a free account on service and share a link on your social media platforms or your Etsy to collect the emails.

Having an active social media presence where you engage with followers is also helpful. There are multiple different platforms that you can choose from. Think about it this way when you are choosing the ones to use, “Where are my target audience most active? Where do they go to find products like mine?”

One of the things that I have learned over the years is that people want to know your story. Why do you do what you do? What inspires you? Share the process behind your work. With all the ai generated art out there, people want to see you creating, they want to see the human element that makes your work unique. Above all be authentic.

The old saying is true: It’s not just what you know, but who you know. Building relationships within the art world and beyond can lead to collaborations, commissions, and opportunities. I shared a post all about building community and how it really helps you be a better artist.

Some of the actions that I am focusing on this year is to reach out to one new person or company every week— I am working toward getting my art out there in different ways and I hope to be able to work with new clients this year and so my focus is reaching out, whether it’s a gallery, a fellow artist, or a potential collaborator.

One of my favorite things to do is to keep learning The art business is always changing, and staying informed can give you an edge. Read books, listen to podcasts, and take courses on marketing, sales, and entrepreneurship. I always joke and say I am a professional student. There have been years where I have taken a new class every month and there have been years where I have read a different business book every month. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to learn new skills. YouTube can be your best friend when trying to learn something new. I have learn so much from different people on the platform. Maybe you’re a painter who gets inspired by a poet’s way with words, or a filmmaker who picks up storytelling tips from a dancer. Collaboration like this can push you to try things you might never have thought of on your own. It’s all about stepping out of your bubble and seeing what’s possible.

I have been apart of a few creative communities over the years. Most of them are in the online world and this past year I was able to meet a good many of the people that make up this community. I twas so nice to be with them in person and give hugs to the people that have encouraged me when I have felt like giving up. It is not just one group that I am apart of it is a couple. Both of the groups were created by UK artists and so the trip that I made was across the pond to visit them, and now I feel even more of a connection to them because they are not just a face on a screen, they are people that have helped me learn what is means to be in a creative community. They are truly friends and that makes it so special. Because of this community I have been apart of a group project where 12 different artist contributed to a calendar that celebrates small businesses.

The Communities that I am apart of are over on Patreon. One of the first that I joined is Emily Harvey Art’s community of creative small businesses. We meet up on zoom a couple of times a month and we have quarterly accountability calls, there are guest speakers that help us learn new things like marketing and other business skills. I was so excited to be able to attend the meetup this past March in Manchester, England. It was so good to be in the room with so many of the group. It was scheduled to be a one evening event and we sort of stretch it out into two days.

The second community I joined is the one created by April of MonkeyMintaka. I first found April back in 2018 over on Youtube and I loved her videos on using all the art supplies. Her approach to mixed media really inspired me. She host a monthly zoom where she shares different references for us to draw. It is a very chatty zoom. Through her community I have connected with a few different people. Back in March I was able to meet up with April in the Lake District of England for a couple of days and we went for a couple of very rainy walks around the lakes. It was such an enjoyable time. I also met up with a couple of other along the way that I would have never known had it not been for April’s community.

So just remember art doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It thrives on connection, exchange, and support. Sure, there’s a time and place for working alone, but don’t underestimate what can happen when you find your creative tribe. Whether it’s a local group, an online forum, or a collective of friends, joining an artistic community could be the best thing you do for your art—and yourself.

For the past few years I have been choosing a word for the year. Something to focus on and something to help me grow in different ways.

I have been thinking about this for the past few weeks and if has not been really easy to choose one for this year. I know that this is going to be a year of big change for our family, so I have been thinking about words that fit this, as well as starting a new chapter.

Our oldest daughter will be living on campus a few hours away for the next semester and this is a really big change not just for her but for us as well. She will be graduating college this year and so change is coming.

We have our home on the market and when it sells we will be making a very big move, and this is both exciting and scary at the same time. So the themes of change, transition and moving forward have really been on my mind as I contemplate the word of the year that I will choose.

Some of the words that I have been considering are:

Courage – A reminder to trust God’s strength and promises through change , Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and courageous... the Lord your God will be with you".

Promise – Anchored in trusting God’s faithfulness, 2 Peter 3:9: "The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise".

Illuminate – Points to God as the light guiding through darkness, Psalm 119:105: "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path".

Yield – A call to surrender fully to God’s will and timing, Proverbs 3:5: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart".

Renewal – Emphasizes spiritual refreshment and new beginnings in Christ, Isaiah 40:31: "Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength".

Thrive - Living abundantly in God’s grace and flourishing in His promises, even in challenging seasons, John 10:10 – "I have come that they may have life and have it to the full."

Pivot - Turning toward God’s direction, often through a change in circumstances or perspective, Isaiah 30:21 – "Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, 'This is the way; walk in it.'"

Transform - Experiencing spiritual renewal and becoming more like Christ, Romans 12:2 – "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."

Bloom - Flourishing in God’s timing and purpose, rooted in His Word, Ecclesiastes 3:11 – "He has made everything beautiful in its time."

Forge - Shaping your life and faith through trials and perseverance, with God as the refiner, Isaiah 48:10 – "See, I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction."

Navigate - Trusting God to guide your path and direct your steps through uncharted territory, Proverbs 3:6 – "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

Leap - Taking a bold step of faith, trusting God to guide and sustain you, Hebrews 11:1 – "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

The word that I have chosen really spoke to me and I hope that it will for you too.

Breakthrough – Focuses on God's power to make a way in the midst of challenges.

• Isaiah 43:19: "Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert."

• A moment when God intervenes powerfully, breaking down barriers and bringing victory, freedom, or clarity.

• It reflects His ability to overcome what seems insurmountable and make a way where there is none.

• Breakthrough in faith signifies moments when God’s power overcomes human limitations.

• It often comes after a season of waiting, prayer, or struggle, showing His faithfulness in fulfilling His promises.

• Whether it’s overcoming spiritual bondage, emotional burdens, or external challenges, breakthroughs remind us of God's ability to shatter barriers and bring about transformation.

• Trust in God’s timing and power, even when circumstances feel overwhelming.

• Stay aligned with His Word and ready to move forward when He opens doors.

I am going to create a few things that I can print out and use in my journal with this word on it. I will share what I create here once I get them done. I am thinking that I might make a few different ones for the other words that I have been considering as well.

I have been journaling every day for the month of December and I have really enjoyed the process of the pen on the paper. I have been filming a lot of new videos that will be coming to my YouTube channel over the next few weeks. I have published a new video over on my YouTube channel all about my new planner. I created a digital version that can either be printed or used in Goodnotes or any other digital annotation app. I also turned it in to a printed version that you can order on Amazon. There are two different size formats as well as an undated version. Each of the sizes are formatted so that you can choose if you would like a larger size to give you more room to write or you can choose the smaller size to have one that is more portable.

I have started a new YouTube channel for my travel vlogs. I have a backlog of travel content that really didn’t fit on my artsy channel so I decided to start a new channel dedicated to my love of adventure and travel. With a bit of foodie finds thrown in for good measure.

The video is live on the channel and it is all about our one week road trip around Wyoming. It was filmed in August of 2023 and I have had it in the editing mode for a while and finally finished it. I didn’t do a voice over for it but I made it, like the videos that I like to watch.

I created three different thumbnails but since the channel is new I don’t have the option of uploading multiple ones to see which one works better. I like to have different ones to see what type catches peoples eye.

I am also in the editing phase of my United Kingdom vlogs, I am going to break them up into a few different ones and try to focus on the different areas that we visited. I will also be filming a vlog about Jekyll Island, and a few of the towns near where we live now so that I can have them to revisit once we have made our big move.
