We're excited to introduce the latest addition to our team here at Roberts Forensic: Dylan J. “DJ” Schramm. While you might know him from his standout performances on the “smurf turf” as a Boise State team captain, DJ Schramm is now setting up to tackle the world of forensic engineering and crash reconstruction.

"We couldn't be happier to welcome DJ to our team," said Torrey Roberts, Owner and Principal Engineer of Roberts Forensic. "His diverse skill set and unwavering work ethic makes him a great fit with our company culture. We're eager to support him as he learns the tools of crash reconstruction and forensic engineering.”

In his new role with us, Mr. Schramm will be utilizing his mechanical engineering degree and his strategic thinking skills to assist our firm in crash site inspections, vehicle inspections research, documentation, and data processing as he continues to educate himself in the field of crash reconstruction. His expertise as a licensed drone pilot and motorcycle rider will be put to good use. He is currently taking Traffic Crash Reconstruction 1 and 2 courses from Northwestern University.

When asked why he chose Roberts Forensic and how his skills on the football field might translate to his work, Mr. Schramm shared, “I chose Roberts Forensic because of the opportunities to continue to grow as a person and engineer, and because crash investigation is something that really interests me. I couldn't be more excited to be joining Roberts Forensic and getting to work alongside Torrey [Roberts] and Riley [McCoy].

I think my experience playing college football will contribute to my ability to adapt to different situations and environments; and the work ethic I developed over my football career will also help while I continue to learn the ins and outs of crash reconstruction.”

We are grateful to have Mr. Schramm as part of our team and look forward to the future together.

Home | Expert Profiles | Services | Submit Assignment | Contact Us

1. What made you choose Roberts Forensic and crash reconstruction?

I had recently graduated from Boise State and was trying to figure out what I wanted to do for a career. Torrey and I had a mutual friend who told me Torrey was looking for a recently graduated mechanical engineer so I set up an interview to see what the job was about and here we are 4 years later.

2. What has been your most interesting experience you've had over the past four years?

This is a hard question to answer because you see a lot of different things in this career. Some are a little tougher to stomach because we deal with a lot of fatalities, but it is interesting to see how some vehicles hold up in crashes versus other vehicles.

3. What is your favorite thing about your job?

I like the flexibility that comes with this job. I also liked the fact that this wasn’t a typical engineering job and each crash reconstruction was different and required different methods to solve each problem.

4. What are you looking forward to in the future with your job?

I look forward to learning and experimenting with the new technology that comes with this job. For example, we recently purchased a new drone that will be fun and exciting to try out. I also like experimenting with new software programs that we utilize in crash reconstruction.

5. What do you like to do in your free time?

In my free time, I like to enjoy the outdoors. This could be anything from hiking to rock climbing, to going camping with my girlfriend and dogs. I also like to check out the new breweries around town with some friends.

Google has released software in recent years, which can be utilized to create 3D models for HVE environments. SketchUp (SU) is a 3D drawing program by Google that is supported by Google Earth’s (GE) Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Aerial Photography and 3D Warehouse (3DW). DEM data can be imported from GE with overlaid aerial photography and used in SU as a starting point for 3D accident scene modeling. 3DW provides pre-made models of environmental objects and vehicles submitted by other users of SU. The accident scene model created with SU can be imported into HVE as a 3D environment. The 3D model can also be exported to a .kmz file and viewed with GE software. This paper will discuss the use of SU as a 3D environment modeling tool and give some examples of its application. READ FULL PUBLICATION

Software required includes HVE/HVE-2D, a PDF editor with dimension feature, Microsoft Word, and Internet Explorer or other browser. The imported aerial photographs need to be scaled to on-site tangible dimensions with a PDF editor before being used as an environment. Site diagram information can be added to the aerial photograph with the PDF editor before importing to HVE. The aerial photograph can then be saved as a .tif file, and imported into the HVE environmental editor as an object texture on a slab of the same dimensions as the scaled aerial photograph. Camera and vehicle positions can then be manipulated in HVE without change of environment scale. This paper will discuss this process in detail and provide examples of imported HVE environments. <a href="ABSTRACT There are multiple aerial photograph sources on the internet that contain high quality images capable of being successfully imported into HVE-2D and used for environment backgrounds.
