Embers of War 16 – Fleeting Peace

"I hope you found some peace, Kiyo. Maybe one day I'll find mine." Shinobu sealed Formless Passage into it's sheath, hoping to never draw it again.

The party has delivered the enigmatic Shinobu to Tadakichi, to negotiate the release of Formless Passage. The moment of truth has arrived for the party. Or will the past haunt them?

Editor and GM Kyrie here. At long last, The Ghosts of Amegawa has concluded. The story is not over yet, but I would like to personally thank everyone for their patience, the players for their time, and my guests their talents in this project I care about so much. The gang escorts Shinobu up the Aoyama mountain range, hoping for safe passage to Dou. Awaiting in the shadows, however, was the prospect of the past jeopardizing the future.

We do some long over-due housekeeping and leveling, while the trio prepare for their journey to Dou. Rain does some training, while Nadeshiko and Phoenix have a chat. What can be learned from the Lady of Amegawa, and can the gang hold it together for their trip?

"I am sorry, Shinobu. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few." Those hollow words echoed in her mind. As the blood of Midorishima's enemies dripped off the edge of her blade, she could only wonder how few were left.

The gang's troubles never seem to be so simple. While an external threat is mitigated, the bonds are beginning to stretch and strain under the weight of their mission. Can the trio make it through together, or will it fall apart like so many others?

On the trail of the Eternal, our heroes grit their teeth and do everything they can to put down this monster. What will it take, and what must be given up to achieve their goals?

Starsung Distance Finale – Talk Amongst Yourselves

Dziban took off their headphones, and sighed. It was fun watching the crew of The Cullet implode via the camera they'd hidden on the bridge, but now it made it pretty hard to imagine they'd come find Dziban and tell them the secret to getting back to the Cillara Sector quickly. Still, the mercenary had heard some pretty interesting things through that bug. Perhaps the road trip was just enough time for that intel to age a little bit, and give potential clients time to realize what it might be worth.

They prepped the launch protocol, and calculated an autopilot back to the Sector. ...WOW that was a long ETA. Ah well. That's what cryo sleep's for, right?

We're starting out with a pair of worldbuilding episodes played in Kingdom, our GM of the game to follow (Six) joined by Dylan and Kyrie to start building. The Andric Alliance is at a crossroads. Their civil war with the Andric Union is beginning to cool, just as tensions with their millennia-old enemy the Federated States of Irrim threatens to heat up. How will the Alliance survive the trials to come? Let's figure it out.

When it came time to leave Earth, no one was left behind, unless they insisted. Some did, of course. But most people weren't willing to die instead of leave the planet. And though most groups got the relatively well-built colony ships, some people were considered less desirable by society, and thus were given inferior resources. In particular, those who were incarcerated at the time of the evacuation of Earth were given especially useless ships and equipment to survive with.

Naturally, there were deaths. But on the whole, the former prisoners pulled together, and survived. They built their own home, far in uncharted space. Vestis Station. And for the people who had kept them in cages for offensives grave, insignificant, or imaginary... they just decided to never speak with them again.

Life had other plans, and sometimes the descendants of those bastards showed up on their doorstep. This is the story of one such incident.

The Eternal appears, with only one deadly goal; secure another Lotus Petal. As an engine of immense cruelty and power, he challenges our heroes and pushes them to their limits. His blade may rend flesh, but sharp words and boiling emotions may push our heroes to their limits.

It was uncommon for Davis Deadwater to be at a loss for words, but this was a very special circumstance. He tilted his head this way and that, staring at the report on his desk. In front of him, a Meridian intelligence officer squirmed in anxious discomfort. Finally, he looked up at the officer. "So they got ate by a... a black hole?"

"It seems that way, sir... the Anti-Entropists managed to generate one with that massive robot of theirs, and as the document says, they attempted to go into hyperspace, but then we lost them."

Deadwater frowned. "And it couldn't just be that you lost track of them?"

The officer shook their head. "We checked their heading, where hyperspace would have taken them. Nothing. No trail, they never arrived."

Deadwater signed. "I was starting to like Robbie, you know. Good kid. Could sense the way the wind was blowing. Which is hard to do, in space." He drummed a finger on his knee. "Well. Guess it's plan B, then."

Be My Shield blinked heavily. Delta slumped to the floor. "Finally. Knew you weren't dead, no way I survive something that you don't. But you were worrying me."

The Anti-Entropist mercenary frowned. "Dziban?"

"They got away, of course. A talent of theirs." Delta snorted derisively.

Be My Shield gathered their strength to stand up, then felt their body scream in protest, and abandon the effort. "I am not well," they said simply.

"No shit," agreed Delta. "But you're the one who took medical training, so sorry bud, it's on you." Delta tossed a med kit. "I'll keep watch, though I imagine if anyone shows up, there isn't a lot we can do."

"We can always do something, Delta," replied Shield, opening the kit.

They'd had worse days, but frankly... not very many.

Despite the attitude they'd presented with, Trick Wodehouse was actually incredibly grateful to Fennel for their presence. There's nothing like a clown when it comes to misdirection, and Trick was playing with extremely high stakes. Were the influencer absent, the Anti-Entropists' involvement in the star's destabilization would certainly be discovered. But Trick was confident that Fennel would find a way to screw everything up.

They couldn't wait to get off this stupid hunk of ice. How anyone could live on a planet, stationary in space, baffled them.

From that explosion of life, the ripple effect is infinite and unfathomable. And yet while we were not there when the stone first crashed into the still lake, the tidal wave that erupts from it still washes us away.

The gang finds themselves in the middle of the town square, seeing a young lady who deemed herself to be a hero suddenly in a lot more danger then she bargained for! Will Nadeshiko find it in herself to help, or will Phoenix and Rain be the only ones willing to save the day? Plus, rumors are swirling of a powerful new threat that pose a grave danger.

The Space Between shook her head. It was a shame that that... "influencer" was unwilling to sell. Despite what she'd told them, in truth Between found it depressing to see such a beautiful machine sit unused. Scratches weren't blemishes, they were badges. If they'd agreed to sell, she would have needed to add some scratches to give it character. Then she could present it to the board.

Rex Servo Navalia was a group of artists, but some very stupid business people. The Princess in Waiting was an attempt to appeal to military interests, and deemed a failure. The lesson they took from it was that they were mistaken to appeal to the military, instead of the rich. How stupid can you be? Why not appeal to the RICH MILITARY? The answer was so obvious it drove Between crazy.

If she could get her hands on this Princess in Waiting, she could show it to them. Remind the board of what their engineers were capable of... and pivot to making the pitch. Wealthy PMCs. Warlords. Kings. There was money on the table those fools were too stupid to see. Well, she'd find some way of showing it to them.

The gang finds themselves face to face with a hero of legend, someone who's very presence seems to warp the world around him. Will they be able to resist the gravity, or will they be caught in the pull? They continue their journey towards a village of people in tune with insects, and Rain catches up with old friends. But what painful secrets will they uncover? The curtains raise once more in our ongoing campaign.

Starsung Distance Episode 3 – Through a Cracked Lens

In her escape pod, Signal Static stewed. The other pilots had been worthless- less than worthless. They fought like fools, talked like idiots, and if Signal managed to make her way back to the Valk, she'd see to it that their records permanently bore the marks of... no. She closed her eyes. They'd died fighting. It was an embarrassing scene, but they were dead now. And angry as she was that they'd so utterly let her down, the decent thing would be to see they got their posthumous promotions, and nice words said at their funerals. Even if those words were lies. Death was punishment enough.

But that ship... that wasn't a smuggler ship. Smugglers don't fight like that, taking the initiative. They bite when cornered but they are by nature cowards. There was something else going on with The Echoing Voice. It also wasn't an Anti-Entropist ship despite its name and markings: the AE were a grouchy group, but they wouldn't open fire without at least a few words exchanged.

Well, nothing for it. She checked her display again. Her escape pod wasn't on an impact trajectory with Rosanct in the near future at least, and someone would notice her. She leaned back, and pulled out her phone. She missed her dog. Dogs were loyal. Dogs wouldn't talk a big game and then fight like- no, no. Put the anger behind you. They're already dead. This isn't helping.

Starsung Distance Episode 2 – Pele’s Tears

Irritation flitted across Khaeris Nyugen's mind, and Terrible Knowledge let out a sigh. For a moment there, it seemed like things were going to get interesting... then the Meridian simply shot down that smuggler ship, and chased off her drone. Taking control of Rosanct would be a simple thing, but there was no one in position to hold it. That woman from the Wardens was on the way, but she was useless, she wouldn't be able to defend it. And it was a waste of the Magister's time to stay.

Still. There was something about the smuggler ship... Khaeris put it out of her mind. Not all mysteries needed solving. Right now, she had bigger fish to fry: namedly, the Anti-Entropist ship that was hiding on the other side of the planet.

Mars Colony Episode 4 – A Farewell to Mars

The other movers and shakers of this world (played by Six) have their own ideas about the future of the colony, and Kelly isn't particularly experienced at this.

This is the second session of our Mars Colony game, playing (as you might guess) Mars Colony by Tim Koppang. I hope y'all are enjoying the campaign: we'll have a few more episodes, and then Mars Colony will conclude and we'll move on to the next game.

For this first campaign, we're playing Mars Colony by Tim Koppang, a game about politics and personal failure set on Mars. Kelly Perkins, played by Jen, has been brought to the failing Mars colony to turn its fortunes around. But Six will be playing all the citizens of Mars that are making things difficult... so the future is uncertain.
