JULY 1, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has posted the third video clip from its recent "Lost Cemeteries of Hudson County" Bus Tour: Speer Cemetery. The tour was held on May 9, 2009 and featured a presentation at the Secaucus Public Library by Richard Veit and Mark Nonestied of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy and left from the library to tour four forgotten cemeteries of Hudson County: The Hudson County Burial Grounds site at Laurel Hill, Old Bergen Cemetery, Speer Cemetery and The Jersey City/Harsimus Cemetery, which is now under new management intent on restoring the historic location.

Hudson Observer Death Notices Additional Months Posted

JUNE 11, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the posting of two more months of death notices from the The Hudson Observer newspaper. The indexing is being completed in partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library. November and December 1905 have been posted on the Society web site.

Additional Months of the Discontinued Jersey Journal Death Notices Project Posted

JUNE 10, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the release of 6 additional months of death notices from the The Jersey Journal Death Notices Project in partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library. The project was discontinued after the full catalog of the newspaper was taken over to be digitized by Newsbank, but the months completed by the HCGS volunteers are available to the public for free on our Web site.

The dates added to the database are: July 1924, September & October 1925, October & December 1926 and December 1927.

Call for Volunteers! Old Bergen Cemetery Cleanup May 16, 2009

MARCH 31, 2009 JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The Old Bergen Reformed Church is having a cleanup of the cemetery on May 16, 2009 and needs volunteers to help.

Old Bergen Cemetery holds Some of the earliest Hudson County residents are buried there including Jane Tuers, a heroine of the American Revolution.

The Old Bergen cemetery is at 893 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City. There is a church parking lot across the street on Highland Avenue and on street parking is also available. (Free and Metered). Please meet at the cemetery at 10am.

MARCH 19, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society announces that Jim Madden of the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association will be presenting "How to research your Civil War Ancestors" at its April 4, 2009 meeting

Jim has been credited in over 35 books and TV programs for his research and together with the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association he has worked extensively with the NJ State Archives on indexing records. The NJ Civil War Heritage Association reaches out and makes grants to appropriate organizations for funding of specific indexing projects. The funding provides for the hiring of archivists who do the indexing work rather than volunteers

New Hudson County Genealogical Society Database Launched: Old Bergen Reformed Church Deaths

MARCH 4, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has launched a new database of the deaths recorded in the Old Bergen Reformed Church.

Founded in 1660 and continuing to this day Old Bergen Church is the oldest continuous congregation in the State of New Jersey. As part of his book, “The History of Land Titles in Hudson County, NJ”, published in 1872, Charles H. Winfield included the records of Marriages, Births and Deaths taken from the records of the Old Bergen Reformed Church, and for the most part translated from the Dutch.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society has posted two maps of the Laurel Hill/Snake Hill Asylum site courtesy of speaker Dan McDonough, Secaucus Town Historian from his January 24, 2009 presentation of "The Hudson County Burial Grounds and Snake Hill Cemetery." The presentation was held at the Secaucus Public Library, Secaucus, NJ.

Due to expected inclement weather, the January 10, 2009 Presentation on Snake Hill by Dan McDonough has been cancelled and rescheduled for Jan 24.The Hudson County Genealogical Society is pleased to post the last 5 years of The Bayonne Times Death Notices Index database courtesy of member Bill Miller, who over the years has indexed over 13,000 death notices appearing in The Bayonne Times from 1915 to 1945.
The years 1941-1945 have been added to the collection and are now available on the Web site for free public access.

Slide Show of "America Triumphant" Rededication Posted

The newly restored World War I memorial bronze statue titled "America Triumphant" was rededicated in 2008 in Pershing Field, Jersey City, NJ. Hudson County Genealogical Society president Bob Murgittroyd was deeply involved in the efforts to restore the memorial and now a pictorial and audio slide show of the rededication ceremony can be viewed on the Hudson County Genealogical Society web site along with the database of Hudson City residents who gave their lives in World War I.

New Hudson County Genealogical Society Database Launched: World War I Casualties from Hudson City

NOVEMBER 19, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — On July 4, 1922 thousands of Jersey City residents turned out at Pershing Field to view the unveiling of the memorial, “America Triumphant”, erected by popular subscription in memory of the 147 Hudson City war heroes, residents of the old Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Wards, who gave their lives in World War I.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society New Database: The Family Tree of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle

OCTOBER 10, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society, the only genealogy and family history group focused entirely on the study of Hudson County New Jersey, is pleased to announce the launch of a new database: The Family Tree of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle.

Jacob Wallingen (b. 1599 d. 17 Aug 1657), the progenitor of the Van Winkle family in the USA came from the village of Winkel, Holland and according to the custom of that country became known by the name of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle ("van" signifying "from"). He sailed from Hoorn, Holland in 1634 with his wife Trintje Jacobs and arrived at New Amsterdam (New York) in June 1635. He was a member of "The Twelve Men", the advisory council to Gov. Kieft August 29, 1641, the first representative body in New Netherland.
The charts are based on the original Van Winkle family tree drawn by Daniel Van Winkle (1839-1919) and contain many well-known Hudson County families including: Van Winkle, Winne, Marcellus, Waldron, Sip, Van Vorst, Brinkerhoff, Vreeland, Van Newkirk, Sickles, Paulus, Ackerman and others.

The dates added to the database are: January 1907, January & February 1924 and August 1926

The project has been discontinued while the full catalog of the newspaper is digitized by Newsbank, but the months completed by the HCGS volunteers are now available to the public for free on our Web site.

JULY 15, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — Holy Name Cemetery on West Side Avenue in Jersey City, NJ is THE cemetery for Roman Catholics in the area and most family historians have extra burial information for persons in Holy Name Cemetery that they compiled while searching for their own ancestors — much of it probably turned out to be unrelated. In response to high member interest, The Hudson County Genealogical Society decided to help put that extra information to good use and launched a project to compile volunteer-contributed burial data into a searchable index that may help others find the final resting place of their loved ones.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society to Index Death Notices from The Hudson Observer

JUNE 28, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has partnered with the Jersey City Free Public Library to index death notices found in The Hudson Observer. The Jersey City Free Public Library has the Observer on microfilm.

The library will use the index to make searches for library patrons easier and HCGS members will be able to browse the full index on the Society's Web site. The general public will have access to a surname index on the site. The library is asking especially for volunteers who have time to come to the library and make photocopy packets of the microfilmed newspaper pages so they can be passed out to volunteers working on the indexing.

Hudson County Genealogical Society Releases 6 Months of Jersey Journal Death Notices to Genealogists

JUNE 17, 2008 - JERSEY CITY, NJ. 6 months of Death Notices indexed by volunteers and originally only available to members of the Hudson County Genealogical Society are now available to the general public on the web site of the Hudson County Genealogical Society.

In 2007 the HCGS partnered with the Jersey City Free Public Library to assist in creating an index to the death notices in The Jersey Journal newspaper but by April 2008 the rights to digitize The Jersey Journal archives were purchased by Newsbank. As a result, the HCGS and the Library have discontinued the indexing project, but the completed months are still available for browsing.

Jersey City Cemetery Update - New Board Chosen

JUNE 13, 2008 - JERSEY CITY, NJ. A new board of directors and officers for Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery was elected at a special meeting called by the New Jersey State Cemetery Board on June 12, 2008.

The new directors are:

Brian Lamb
Darlene Cimino
Michelle Egar
Jorge Aviles
Jasime Pinet
Hector Solivan
Eileen Marenstein

The board then elected Eileen Marenstein - President and Treasurer, Jorge Aviles - Vice President, and Jasime Pinet - Secretary.

The new board faces the challenge of how to continue to operate the cemetery and maintain it in the future. It was reported by the Cemetery Board that the cemetery's Maintenance and Preservation Fund contained only a little over $17,000 and generated income of only a little more than $700 last year. Under New Jersey State law only the income of the Fund can be used to maintain the grounds.

Another item of interest which came up during the meeting is the fact that the records of the cemetery may have been removed from the premises by a relative of the past caretaker. The new board is aware of the importance of the records and will make every effort to secure them.

Given the situation at the cemetery now is the time for anyone with family interred at the cemetery to step up to lend a helping hand.

Alert to Those With Ancestors Buried in Jersey City Cemetery

May 12, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has recently become aware of the apparent abandonment of the Jersey City Cemetery, formerly known as Harsimus Cemetery. The Jersey Journal has just published an article concerning the current state of the cemetery.

The 179-year-old graveyard, now without a caretaker, is being overrun by vegetation and has many toppled grave markers. The Hudson County Genealogical Society at the 2008 Hoboken Art & Music Festival

The Hudson County Genealogical Society will have a table at the upcoming Hoboken Art & Music Festival on Sunday, May 4 from 11am to 6pm. This event will be HCGS's biggest exposure to the public this year.

The Hoboken Festival is one of the largest outdoor events in Hudson County each year. Well over 25,000 people will pass our table giving us an opportunity to spread the word about our mission, projects and events.

The Hoboken Festival is also scheduled to feature a performance by Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society is pleased to add additional years of The Bayonne Times Death Notices Index database courtesy of member Bill Miller, who over the years has indexed over 13,000 death notices appearing in The Bayonne Times from 1915 to 1945.
With the recent addition of five more years, 1915-1925 inclusive are now available on the Web site for free public access.

COMING SOON: The Descendants of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle

In January 2008, a series of 18x24 hand-drawn pedigree charts were donated to The Hudson County Genealogical Society by Mary Beth Hansbury, whose stepfather, George Van Winkle Kelly, commissioned a professional researcher to compile the descendants of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle.

The charts are based on the original Van Winkle family tree drawn by Daniel Van Winkle (1839-1919) and contain many well-known Hudson County families including: Van Winkle, Winne, Marcellus, Waldron, Sip, Van Vorst, Brinkerhoff, Vreeland, Van Newkirk, Sickles, Paulus, Ackerman and others.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society Launches It's Online Gift Store

On February 9, 2008 The Hudson County Genealogical Society will be holding a Genealogy Roundtable Discussion. The Hudson County Genealogical Society has a diverse wealth of knowledge in its growing membership, many of whom have performed research for a long time. We will be holding an open roundtable discussion on all genealogy topics that may include surnames we are researching, brick walls we have encountered or broken through, and more. Discussion will begin with a simple introduction by each person and what names you are researching.

Bring your family photos, Pedigree Charts, brickwalls and genealogy questions and tap into the collective expertise of the group! It is your opportunity to share successes, frustrations, and ask questions. Who knows- someone may have the answers you need!

Ancestry.com Releases the 1895 New Jersey State Census Online

State censuses were taken in New Jersey every ten years from 1855-1915. This database contains information from the 1895 New Jersey State Census for over 1.5 million people. It covers all counties. Information listed includes: name of individual, their gender, race, and place of enumeration.
