New Database: Hudson County World War II First Round Draftees

MARCH 17, 2013 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society announces a new database available for browsing on its Web site: Hudson County World War II First Round Draftees. This database is an index of nearly 170 young men from Hudson County, New Jersey drawn in the first round draft lottery from the October 29, 1940 issue of The Jersey Observer newspaper. The index contains the Name, Town and Draft Number for each person.

This database was transcribed and provided by Joseph W. Mann Jr, a HCGHS member who has given permission for The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society to post it on its web site for free access. Use of the database is for personal, non-commercial genealogical research only and may not be compiled, repurposed or otherwise used in a derivative format for commercial sale. The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society Announces New Additions to the Emil J. Rohner Family Collection

DECEMBER 27, 2012 -- JERSEY CITY, NJ. -- The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society announces that new items have been added to the Emil J. Rohner Family Collection that can be browsed and viewed on its website.

Emil and Olga Rohner were fastidious collectors of newspaper clippings not only about their son Emil Jr serving in the US Army during World War II, but also other residents of North Bergen. This collection contains dozens of newspaper clippings, photos and other ephemera saved by the Rohners and provides a glimpse into life on the North Bergen homefront during the World War II.

DECEMBER 27, 2012 -- JERSEY CITY, NJ. -- The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society now has access to a series of grave registration records for Civil War veterans who were buried in Hudson County, New Jersey. The records consist of thousands of index cards that often recorded not only the name, date and location of death but also often their Civil War service information, cause of death, where they were buried and more. The cards themselves may not hold complete information and the set of index cards is most likely not a complete list of veteran burials within Hudson County, but it may help in your family history research.

New Collection Online: Civil War Pension File of Emanuel J. Reichhelm

JANUARY 9, 2012 – JERSEY CITY, NJ — The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society, one of the only genealogy and family history groups focused entirely on the study of Hudson County, New Jersey, is pleased to announce the launch of a new collection: the Civil War Pension File of Emanuel J. Reichhelm.

Emanuel J. Reichhelm was enlisted as a Chaplain in the 82nd Regiment Illinois Volunteers in the Civil War and after discharge applied for a disability pension. In later years he was a resident of Uniontown, Hudson County, NJ and died years after his pension application was rejected and numerous appeals. It is a fascinating look into the detailed process required to apply for a Civil War disability pension.

This collection of documents obtained from the National Archives was donated by David C. Bailey, Sr., Naperville, IL to The Hudson County Genealogical Society on 3/4/2010. The collection is not currently indexed but individual images may be browsed.

The database contains information on the appointments of Union City and West Hoboken Police officers from 1879-1946 (incomplete) from the "Journal Registers of Charles L McCarthy Sr," a police officer in West Hoboken and Union City from 1901 to 1927.

This database was transcribed in March 2009 by James M. Miller, a HCGHS member and great grandson of Charles L. McCarthy Sr. who have given permission for The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society to post it on its web site for free access. New Dempsey & Sons Funeral Home Records (Bayonne) Added

June 17, 2011 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society announces additional records have been added to the Dempsey & Sons Funeral Home Record Books - Bayonne on its website. The added records are for 1896-1897.

Dempsey & Sons Funeral home operated for about 100 years, from late 1850s to about 1947 with offices in Bayonne and Staten Island. From over two dozen books obtained by the Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Staten Island, more than 20 years ago, the group is providing the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society with indexes from the Bayonne office.

This database is the result of the work of Lynn R. Rogers-Executive Director, Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Inc. Staten Island who have given permission for The Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society to post it on its web site for free access. New Database: Dempsey & Sons Funeral Home Record Books - Bayonne

FEBRUARY 6, 2011 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogial Society announces a new database available for browsing on its Web site: Dempsey & Sons Funeral Home Record Books - Bayonne. Currently the 1904-1905 records are available on the website.

Dempsey & Sons Funeral home operated for about 100 years, from late 1850s to about 1947 with offices in Bayonne and Staten Island. From over two dozen books obtained by the Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Staten Island, more than 20 years ago, the group is providing the Hudson County Genealogical & Historical Society with indexes from the Bayonne office.

This database is the result of the work of Lynn R. Rogers-Executive Director, Friends of Abandoned Cemeteries, Inc. Staten Island who have given permission for The Hudson County Genealogical Society to post it on its web site for free access. Use of the database is for personal, non-commercial genealogical research only and may not be compiled, repurposed or otherwise used in a derivative format for commercial sale. Where applicable, databases hosted on this site remain the property of the contributor(s) to be used in accordance with US Copyright Laws and Regulations.

Lee of Civil War fame) raided the British fort at Paulus Hook. On Saturday, October 9, 2010, Tom Bragen, a member of The George Washington Commemorative Society of Jersey City, will relate the story at “Come Home to History,” an all-day history fair at the Hudson County Community College Culinary Conference Center, 161 Newkirk Street, Jersey City. Bragen's presentation is scheduled for 2:45 pm.

APRIL 20, 2010 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogial Society announces a new database available for browsing on its Web site: West Hoboken Soldier Deaths During World War I.

This database contains names of soldiers resident of West Hoboken who were killed or died during the World War April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918. Contains, name, address, rank, branch of service, date of death and name/residence of nearest relative.

This database is the result of the work of multiple volunteer contributors who have given permission for The Hudson County Genealogical Society to post their efforts on its web site for free access. Use of the database is for personal, non-commercial genealogical research only and may not be compiled, repurposed or otherwise used in a derivative format for commercial sale. MARCH 22, 2010 — JERSEY CITY, NJ — The Hudson County Genealogical Society is sponsoring an essay contest for the public school children of Jersey City to commemorate the 350th anniversary of the founding on the Town of Bergen, the first permanent European settlement in New Jersey. In cooperation with the Jersey City Board of Education, the Jersey City Free Public Library, and New Jersey City University, the contest continues the tradition of similar events held for the 250th anniversary in 1910 and the 300th anniversary in 1960.

MARCH 15, 2010 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — Following in the tradition of last year's successful "Lost Cemeteries of Hudson County" tour, the HCGS is pleased to announce that our June 12, 2010 meeting will be a trip to Ellis Island! In addition to the regular attractions of the national park, our group will receive a special guided tour of the recently opened Ferry House.

The tour cost $20 of per person includes:

* The roundtrip ferry ticket to Ellis Island
* The special guided tour of the Ferry House on the island
* Access to the museum (explore on your own)
* Access to Liberty Island (but access to the Statue of Liberty monument is not included)

The West New York Veterans of WWII database of 1,950 names was provided thanks to the efforts of the West New York Library's Estela Longo, Alan Ballester, and Weiliang Lai from a series of 3 anonymously donated scrapbooks of newspaper clippings featuring those in the database. FEBRUARY 21, 2010 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogial Society announces a new database available for browsing on its Web site: Bayonne Herald and Greenville Register Deaths 1901-1915

The Bayonne Herald and Greenville Register, was a weekly newspaper in early Bayonne. Locally known as The Herald, it was published every Saturday Morning. It was big on political news of the day. The Herald had no obituary section as we know it today, but carried stories on selected deaths in the city. (By the papers own account there were an average of 90 local deaths per month, but it only published about 10 percent of them). The size of the stories ranged from very large for prominent persons to 3 lines for a local citizen killed on the rail.

JUNE 10, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society is pleased to announce the release of 6 additional months of death notices from the The Jersey Journal Death Notices Project in partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library. The project was discontinued after the full catalog of the newspaper was taken over to be digitized by Newsbank, but the months completed by the HCGS volunteers are available to the public for free on our Web site.

The dates added to the database are: July 1924, September & October 1925, October & December 1926 and December 1927.

MARCH 31, 2009 JERSEY CITY, NJ. - The Old Bergen Reformed Church is having a cleanup of the cemetery on May 16, 2009 and needs volunteers to help.

Old Bergen Cemetery holds Some of the earliest Hudson County residents are buried there including Jane Tuers, a heroine of the American Revolution.

The Old Bergen cemetery is at 893 Bergen Avenue, Jersey City. There is a church parking lot across the street on Highland Avenue and on street parking is also available. (Free and Metered). Please meet at the cemetery at 10am.

Jim has been credited in over 35 books and TV programs for his research and together with the New Jersey Civil War Heritage Association he has worked extensively with the NJ State Archives on indexing records. The NJ Civil War Heritage Association reaches out and makes grants to appropriate organizations for funding of specific indexing projects. The funding provides for the hiring of archivists who do the indexing work rather than volunteers

New Hudson County Genealogical Society Database Launched: Old Bergen Reformed Church Deaths

MARCH 4, 2009 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has launched a new database of the deaths recorded in the Old Bergen Reformed Church.

Founded in 1660 and continuing to this day Old Bergen Church is the oldest continuous congregation in the State of New Jersey. As part of his book, “The History of Land Titles in Hudson County, NJ”, published in 1872, Charles H. Winfield included the records of Marriages, Births and Deaths taken from the records of the Old Bergen Reformed Church, and for the most part translated from the Dutch.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society has posted two maps of the Laurel Hill/Snake Hill Asylum site courtesy of speaker Dan McDonough, Secaucus Town Historian from his January 24, 2009 presentation of "The Hudson County Burial Grounds and Snake Hill Cemetery." The presentation was held at the Secaucus Public Library, Secaucus, NJ.

Members can log in to the HCGS Member Web Site to view and download the 1906 and 1923 tax maps.

An audio podcast of the presentation is in development.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society Posts the First Months of The Hudson Observer Death Notices Project

Slide Show of "America Triumphant" Rededication Posted

The newly restored World War I memorial bronze statue titled "America Triumphant" was rededicated in 2008 in Pershing Field, Jersey City, NJ. Hudson County Genealogical Society president Bob Murgittroyd was deeply involved in the efforts to restore the memorial and now a pictorial and audio slide show of the rededication ceremony can be viewed on the Hudson County Genealogical Society web site along with the database of Hudson City residents who gave their lives in World War I.

The Photo Detective is Coming to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society

Bill not only added additional servicemen to the list but has appended more information such as Company/Unit and branch of service, where available.

New Hudson County Genealogical Society Database Launched: World War I Casualties from Hudson City

NOVEMBER 19, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — On July 4, 1922 thousands of Jersey City residents turned out at Pershing Field to view the unveiling of the memorial, “America Triumphant”, erected by popular subscription in memory of the 147 Hudson City war heroes, residents of the old Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Wards, who gave their lives in World War I.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society New Database: The Family Tree of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle

OCTOBER 10, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society, the only genealogy and family history group focused entirely on the study of Hudson County New Jersey, is pleased to announce the launch of a new database: The Family Tree of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle.

Jacob Wallingen (b. 1599 d. 17 Aug 1657), the progenitor of the Van Winkle family in the USA came from the village of Winkel, Holland and according to the custom of that country became known by the name of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle ("van" signifying "from"). He sailed from Hoorn, Holland in 1634 with his wife Trintje Jacobs and arrived at New Amsterdam (New York) in June 1635. He was a member of "The Twelve Men", the advisory council to Gov. Kieft August 29, 1641, the first representative body in New Netherland.
The charts are based on the original Van Winkle family tree drawn by Daniel Van Winkle (1839-1919) and contain many well-known Hudson County families including: Van Winkle, Winne, Marcellus, Waldron, Sip, Van Vorst, Brinkerhoff, Vreeland, Van Newkirk, Sickles, Paulus, Ackerman and others.

The dates added to the database are: January 1907, January & February 1924 and August 1926

SEPTEMBER 12, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society, the only genealogy and family history group focused entirely on the study of Hudson County New Jersey, is pleased to announce the release of additional months of death notices from the The Jersey Journal Death Notices Project in partnership with the Jersey City Free Public Library. The project has been discontinued while the full catalog of the newspaper is digitized by Newsbank, but the months completed by the HCGS volunteers are now available to the public for free on our Web site.

The dates added to the database are: January 1907, January & February 1924 and August 1926

Jersey City Cemetery Update - Next Board Meeting

The Hudson County Genealogical Society to Index Volunteer-Contributed Burial Records of Holy Name Cemetery

JULY 15, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — Holy Name Cemetery on West Side Avenue in Jersey City, NJ is THE cemetery for Roman Catholics in the area and most family historians have extra burial information for persons in Holy Name Cemetery that they compiled while searching for their own ancestors — much of it probably turned out to be unrelated. In response to high member interest, The Hudson County Genealogical Society decided to help put that extra information to good use and launched a project to compile volunteer-contributed burial data into a searchable index that may help others find the final resting place of their loved ones.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society to Index Death Notices from The Hudson Observer

JUNE 28, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has partnered with the Jersey City Free Public Library to index death notices found in The Hudson Observer. The Jersey City Free Public Library has the Observer on microfilm.

The library will use the index to make searches for library patrons easier and HCGS members will be able to browse the full index on the Society's Web site. The general public will have access to a surname index on the site. The library is asking especially for volunteers who have time to come to the library and make photocopy packets of the microfilmed newspaper pages so they can be passed out to volunteers working on the indexing.

Hudson County Genealogical Society Releases 6 Months of Jersey Journal Death Notices to Genealogists

JUNE 17, 2008 - JERSEY CITY, NJ. 6 months of Death Notices indexed by volunteers and originally only available to members of the Hudson County Genealogical Society are now available to the general public on the web site of the Hudson County Genealogical Society.

In 2007 the HCGS partnered with the Jersey City Free Public Library to assist in creating an index to the death notices in The Jersey Journal newspaper but by April 2008 the rights to digitize The Jersey Journal archives were purchased by Newsbank. As a result, the HCGS and the Library have discontinued the indexing project, but the completed months are still available for browsing.

Jersey City Cemetery Update - New Board Chosen

JUNE 13, 2008 - JERSEY CITY, NJ. A new board of directors and officers for Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery was elected at a special meeting called by the New Jersey State Cemetery Board on June 12, 2008.

The new directors are:

Brian Lamb
Darlene Cimino
Michelle Egar
Jorge Aviles
Jasime Pinet
Hector Solivan
Eileen Marenstein

The board then elected Eileen Marenstein - President and Treasurer, Jorge Aviles - Vice President, and Jasime Pinet - Secretary.

The new board faces the challenge of how to continue to operate the cemetery and maintain it in the future. It was reported by the Cemetery Board that the cemetery's Maintenance and Preservation Fund contained only a little over $17,000 and generated income of only a little more than $700 last year. Under New Jersey State law only the income of the Fund can be used to maintain the grounds.

Another item of interest which came up during the meeting is the fact that the records of the cemetery may have been removed from the premises by a relative of the past caretaker. The new board is aware of the importance of the records and will make every effort to secure them.

May 12, 2008 – JERSEY CITY, NJ. — The Hudson County Genealogical Society has recently become aware of the apparent abandonment of the Jersey City Cemetery, formerly known as Harsimus Cemetery. The Jersey Journal has just published an article concerning the current state of the cemetery.

The 179-year-old graveyard, now without a caretaker, is being overrun by vegetation and has many toppled grave markers. The New Jersey Cemetery Board, which regulates non-religious ceremonies held a meeting recently discussing the state of the cemetery and several people said they want a new board of directors to be set up because the previous one has vanished as its members died off... The Hudson County Genealogical Society at the 2008 Hoboken Art & Music Festival

The Hudson County Genealogical Society will have a table at the upcoming Hoboken Art & Music Festival on Sunday, May 4 from 11am to 6pm. This event will be HCGS's biggest exposure to the public this year.

The Hoboken Festival is one of the largest outdoor events in Hudson County each year. Well over 25,000 people will pass our table giving us an opportunity to spread the word about our mission, projects and events.

The Hoboken Festival is also scheduled to feature a performance by Mickey Dolenz of The Monkees.

COMING SOON: The Descendants of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle

In January 2008, a series of 18x24 hand-drawn pedigree charts were donated to The Hudson County Genealogical Society by Mary Beth Hansbury, whose stepfather, George Van Winkle Kelly, commissioned a professional researcher to compile the descendants of Jacob Wallingen Van Winkle.

The charts are based on the original Van Winkle family tree drawn by Daniel Van Winkle (1839-1919) and contain many well-known Hudson County families including: Van Winkle, Winne, Marcellus, Waldron, Sip, Van Vorst, Brinkerhoff, Vreeland, Van Newkirk, Sickles, Paulus, Ackerman and others.

The Hudson County Genealogical Society has a diverse wealth of knowledge in its growing membership, many of whom have performed research for a long time. We will be holding an open roundtable discussion on all genealogy topics that may include surnames we are researching, brick walls we have encountered or broken through, and more. Discussion will begin with a simple introduction by each person and what names you are researching.

Information listed includes: name of individual, their gender, race, and place of enumeration.
