Brooklyn Double Shots #32While the forecast for Brooklyn might call for rain and a 20% chance of getting stung by ice pellets, in the not so distance past the metropolis was covered with snow.  This was likely around the time these two great artists from the NYC’s most populated burrough had possibly finished or started mastering the releases we are featuring today.

SNOWMINE is a psychedelic independent five-piece out of Brooklyn who we featured on the Daily Dose in the not too far past. You may remember the excellent song ‘The Hill‘, an introduction to the group from the bands two song LP ‘Laminate Pet Animal‘. Today’s feature comes from their albums that followed, released in November of 2011 (Curfews) and April of 2012 (Saucer Eyes)

BEN LEAR is also from Brooklyn, a songwriter and composer who released his brilliant debut LP, ‘Lillian: A Folk Opera‘ this past April. It quickly received some well deserved praise, including some from all the way out West, a nice review from the Los Angeles Times.

On the eve of Memorial Day here in the States I wanted to bring two groups to your attention that helped supply the soundtrack for a newspaper digging odyssey into my southern ancestry over the past few days. From Civil War ghosts at Fort Sumter, to guerrillas from Tennessee frustrating Sherman, to an interesting surviving Rebel Yell recording that doesn’t resemble Billy Idol’s version in the slightest.

We start out with the cinematic indie folk sounds of Little Sur, with their debut 2011 EP of the same name, six tracks in which you can find both songs featured today. The group is surprisingly from the metropolitan setting of New York, and is lead by Josh Meer and his very talented cast of musicians.

A recent video caught them busking underground, with their distinctive sound a contrast to the surrounding noise of the city.   Check out their newest two song release that came out this past February – Brothers/Idioms.  Links are below.

We follow up with a quick migration down to San Marcos Texas, with the team of two siblings, Maggic and Tyler Heath, who call themselves The Oh Hello’s. The two tracks featured are from their four song self-titled EP which can be found over at BandCamp.     They’ve got a really great mix of influences ranging from Mumford & Sons and The Civil Wars to Los Campesinos! and The Pogues.

Their Bandcamp summation nicely states: Their debut EP draws inspiration from traditional Irish folk songs in both its sound and its message, from the foot-stomping rhythms of Lay Me Down  to the quiet introspection of Cold Is the Night.

You will witness Dracula getting a beatdown in a long lost film, will hear news updates about Zombies on Wall Street, listen to a true story of an ‘undead’ chicken, as well as being witness to many strange tales involving Zombie Cheerleaders, Zombie Cowgirls, with instrumental spooky surf tracks reverberating into the second half.

Yes, the show eventually ends with an accordion filled song of Zombie hatred from a Yiddish 496 year old vampire I ran into this past weekend at LA Oktoberfest. If you still happen to be awake and alive by the end of this 2 hour Horrorthon, we hope you stop to support the artists and spread the Halloween tracks, where inclined.
