Alcatel might not be up there in the list of the top mobilephone manufacturers out there and the company doesn’t seem to have any intention to be counted as a major force in the industry. However, for some reason, they do manufacture mobile phones that do reasonably well – and this time around, they seems to have done a decent job at it. On the eve of the ongoing CES at Las Vegas, they have come up with a bunch of new One Touch branded mobile devices. And one of them actually stakes the claim of being the worlds thinnest smartphone. Things just got interesting didn’t it?

The new handsets that the company announced are the One Touch Idol Ultra, the One Touch Idol and the One Touch Scribe HD. Lets take a closer look at either of these handsets now.

The One Touch Idol Ultra

The One Touch Idol Ultra is not just any other smartphone. At just 6.45 mm, the phone is claimed to be the thinnest smartphone ever. Under that svelte frame houses a 1.2 Ghz Dual Core processor and a fairly large capacity battery. It features a large 4.7 -inch, HD, AMOLED display. It also gets an 8 megapixel camera and the ability to shoot videos in full HD. The phone also runs Android’s latest and greatest version – the butter-smooth version 4.2 JellyBean.

One Touch Idol
This one belongs to the same category as the Idol Ultra – bust adds some flab thanks to the addition of a few things – like a front camera. That said, the Idol is still claimed to be the lightest phone in its category – tipping the scales at 110 grams. Like its thinner brother, the One Touch Idol also features a 4.7″ IPS display, 8MP camera and runs Android Jelly Bean

One Touch Scribe HD

The One Touch Scribe HD is the first smartphone to house the recently released MediaTek MT6589 quad-core chipset. The device claims to “providing faster Internet performance, smoother user-experience to simultaneously run power-hungry apps & games, along with premium multimedia & graphics capabilities.” The device features a 5 inch IPS display and supports 4G LTE networks. It sports an 8MP camera at the rear plus a 720p HD capable front camera. The phone runs Android Jelly Bean.

Alcatel hasn’t announced as to when these three devices would be made available for us mere mortals – but added that this is just a glimpse of their 2013 line-up.

While Nokia is busy promoting its flagship handset the Lumia 800 in the rest of the world, it has just announced perhaps its most essential release in the US since the past few years. We are talking about the newly announced Lumia 900 which officially replaces the Lumia 800 as the flagship Windows Phone powered handset from the Finnish major.

The Lumia 900 is exclusive to AT&T as of now and is visually similar to the Lumia 800 – except for being much bigger in size. The larger size also endows it with a much bigger display. At 4.3 inches, this is by far the biggest display I have come across on a Nokia handset. Do correct me if I am wrong!

The display resolution, however, remains at 800*400 which falls slightly short of the spectacular resolutions we see nowadays on high end Android devices. That said, this is certainly not unusably pixelated or something. The Lumia 900 would also be Nokia’s first ever 4G LTE device.

The Lumia 900 is powered by a 1.4 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8055 processor coupled with an MDM9200 chipset. The processor has already been used on the HTC Flyer and is a tried and tested performer. The 900 also gets a beefier battery which is now rated at 1840 mAH enabling the phone to offer up to 300 hours of standby time and 7 hours of talk time.

On the imaging front too, things have improved with the Lumia 900 getting an improved 8 megapixel camera. This one gets a large f2.2/28mm aperture which aids in low light photography and is ably supported with dual LED flashes at the rear. The same camera doubles up as your HD camcorder albeit it is only capable of capturing videos at 720p at 30 fps. The phone comes with 16 GB of on board memory and weighs in at 160 grams.

Another notable addition is a 1 Megapixel (we haven’t heard of that since quite long, no?) front facing camera which would help you with your video calling attempts.

The Lumia 900 as of now seems only headed States side that too on AT&T. But we have reasons to believe that this would be coming soon to other parts of the globe as well in the not too distant future.

Samsung took covers off a plethora of new products at its launch event organized at this year’s CES. The same occasion had last year seen the birth of the Samsung Galaxy Tab which after the debut of the iPad 2 in March underwent a design change and was eventually launched amidst legal wrangles between Apple and Samsung.

Anyway while the last years’ event was mostly tablets centric, that isn’t the case this year. In fact Samsung started off proceedings with the announcement of its new HDTV lineup with the ES 8000 series. These TV’s are smarter versions of Samsung’s existing lineup of Smart TV’s and features a much faster processor and other hardware inside. Available in screen sizes that range from 46 inches to 65 inches these also some with integrated webcams and support for voice and gesture controls.

These TV’s might also be the first ones on the planet to come with Angry Birds preloaded. This is of course apart from the numerous web apps that you can download for it.

While the Galaxy Note has been around in India and across Asia for the past few weeks, it is just now that it has entered the North American market. The Galaxy Note was displayed along with the LTE version of the Galaxy Tab 7.7. Both these devices would start shipping in the US soon. Apart from these were the announcements on the Ultrabooks front. The much talked about Samsung 9 series Ultrabooks which were praised for its design got an upgrade of sorts this time around with refreshed looks and added features. Also introduces were the lower end Series 5 range of Ultrabooks.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the event was Samsung’s attempt at making your home a fully “connected” one. This concept involves a home that is filled with Samsung products that are connected to each other locally or via the Internet. Products in this line up included two refrigerators – each with a display on which the housewife can run apps as well a similarly connected washing machine. All these connected devices can then be controlled using a Samsung smartphone or a tablet. Interesting.

All these would be a part of Samsung’s closed network which it has named “All Share Play”- which again, sounds dangerously similar to Apple’s “Airplay”. You know, we just noticed.

XPAL Power, the company behind famous battery brands like Energizer and Powerskin have announced a new mobile phone at CES. The phone, known as the SpareOne is unique in the fact that it is powered by a single AA battery.

When I first heard of this, the first thing that came to my mind is the Olive FrvrOn. I hope you folks remember the handset marketed by Olive in India that came with the option of running on either a normal LI-iON battery OR a single AAA battery.

While the SpareOne might technically be not the first mobile phone that runs on a normal pencil battery, it definitely seems to be the first cellphone that ONLY runs on a single AA battery. Besides, the FrvrON ran on smaller AAA batteries. So yeah, XPAL’s claim that it is the only phone that runs on a single AA battery seems to be valid.

Anyway, while this is a far cry from being even relatively close to a smartphone this one seems to be a decent backup phone. It offers up to 10 hours of talk time, and if left unused can retain the battery charge for up to incredible 15 years should you be using an Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA battery. This battery is included with the phone which if we may add, is a good thing. As for the design, the phone is quite a looker with a totally whacky design. The phone supports Micro SIM cards only though.

The SpareOne is not your usual cellphone and has been designed to be used in a variety of special applications which includes emergencies. The phone comes with a built in flashlight (again, not a first) as well as a feature that lets it transmit its location using Cell ID. Oh, and lest we forget, the phone is a GSM handset and would come in different versions for the US and the Americas. And one more thing, there is no display on this one – which I think is not a really good idea. I mean, you should at least get to see what you are dialing, right? But then if they are really going to price this one dirt cheap, most people won’t complain.

Here’s a video on how to use the phone. Looks slick.

The gadget makes the mundane task of keeping track of your baby’s weight gain as he/she grows a tad more exciting. The company calls it the next evolution in home baby and toddler weight tracking. And boy! Do we agree with that statement!

Now, if you think this is just a fancy gadget which would mostly be bought by rich parents who have lots of spare cash to spend on their toddlers, wait till you hear what this thing is capable of doing.

The scale is capable of relaying the weight readings to any connected device in its vicinity – or to any remote computer connected to it in case you wish to use the Internet. The connected device could be a normal PC, an iPad, an iPhone or an iPod Touch. Looks like Android devices are not supported as of now. We hope that changes soon! Withings has developed apps that could be installed on these devices allowing users to keep a tab on the growth of their child.

Parents can also use this App to share information about the child’s growth to their pediatrician all at the press of a button. There are some social features too within the App wherein it allows you to instantly update Facebook, Twitter with new readings as the baby grows. If that wasn’t all, you can also add notes and photos to weight charts which you can preserve as a memory. Cool eh?

The Withings Smart Baby Scale would be made available by Q2, 2012. The price of the device has not been revealed yet.

Acer has shied away from releasing official pictures and spec sheets of the notebook. However, what they have revealed is that this would be the first Ultrabook to come with an Intel Thunderbolt port – a new I/O interface that debuted with the new Macbook Pro’s last February. This port allows data transfers speeds of up to 20 Gb/s. For lesser mortals, there is support for USB 3.0 as well as an HDMI port.

Doing the number crunching bit would be an Intel Core processor (details awaited). The amount of RAM too has not been revealed. As for storage, it is natural that the Ultrabook would need to resort to SSD’s for this purpose. Actual capacities have not been revealed though.

The S5 is expected to ship sometime in Q2, 2012 at an unannounced price. Its predecessor the S3 hovers around the $900 mark and it is safe to assume that the S5 too would be priCed at around that range – if not slightly higher.

We went hands-on with the RIM tablet i.e. the Blackberry Playbook at CES 2011, and here is a fairly detailed demo of the same (running the QNX OS). The Playbook is due to come out in Q1 of 2011 and the OS sure looked powerful. It does real multitasking! A video and game together, both playing simultaneously. The Playbook has HDMI out, MicroUSB connector and dual cameras (5MP on the back). The multitasking / UI is quite a inspiration from the webOS as you would see in the video. In browser Flash videos and smooth pinch to zoom, we were impressed!

We are back from CES 2011 and here is a detailed hands-on video of the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc announced last week. The Arc is certainly one of the most visually appealing smartphones announced recently. Running Android 2.3 (gingerbread) and a GHz processor, this thing manages to be pretty sleek. The 4.2″ screen is real bright, and we also saw the LiveView bluetooth remote attachment and both of these are explored in the video downstairs:

The LG Optimus Black is on display at CES 2011, and we had our few moments with it. The Optimus Black is a 4.0? touchscreen with an advanced gyroscope accelerometer that makes navigation beyond what we are used to (see the video). The Optimus Black runs Android and is a global release (Guess Optimus 2X is the equivalent for US) and features WiFi Direct (P2P file transfers using WiFi). The display on the Optimus Black is said to be 700 nits which is, the brightest out there (as per LG). The thickness is just 0.32 inches thick and weighs 3.84oz.

However, the hardware specs and features are mostly known. The Revolution will go live with Verizon sometime later in 2011 and also features HDMI out. However, no fixed date of availability or pricing is given. We are pretty keen on knowing the battery performance as well (for the ones wondering, yes we are comparing it with an iPhone 4 in the picture up there). Video and gallery downstairs:

Microsoft showed of some incredible hardware at its CES 2011 keynote. While, the announcement of the next release of Windows running on SoC (ARM and X86) would prompt the industry pundits to take out a magnifying glass (well that already happened with the rumors coming out a few weeks back), the upcoming Windows 7 PCs demoed were running on Intel’s Sandy Bridge (2nd gen Core processors) and AMD’s Fusion. Microsoft also announced Xbox updates with Kinect for Netflix and announced Hulu plus (coming later, Spring). So if you saw early promos of Projet Natal you would have noticed controlling home entertainment by gestures, you would now be able to use Kinect gestures and your voice for navigating Netflix and Hulu. Avatar Kinect was also announced for Xbox Live Gold members this spring allowing their Kinect setup to track facial expressions like a smile or laugh (wonder what Kinect will do when it can monitor more points on your body? Measure boredom?) For now, lets take a quick look at the hardware displayed at the keynote:

Microsoft demoed several Windows 7 PCs working on the Intel Sandy Bridge (new Core series) and AMD’s Fusion processors. The demo included a performance test on portable computers running the IE9 test drive site (Galactic Performance demo, HTML). But what steals the show is the upcoming ones. Some of the upcoming Windows PC form factors that wowed us included an Acer Dual-Screen laptop that had been heard before, but demoed in front of our eyes here at CES. The Acer has two 14? touch-screens, and you just have to do a 10 finger gesture on the screen to get a software keyboard up and running. Thats can be a crazy device with some good applications.

Then there is the Samsung PC7 sliding series PCs that has a tablet form factor but light weight and folds to look like a conventional tablet. The best part of the PC7 sliding series is that it has no fans, its passively cooled (based on Intel Oak Trail). We will have a detailed look at the PC7 in a bit (Update: here is an exclusive look at the TX100 sliding PC).

The next was an ASUS Tablet PC that runs on the Core i5 processor. The ASUS tablet has a 180 degree viewing angle on its screen. This worked with touch input aswell as pen. We can expect it to come up with a wireless keyboard in a few months.

Mirosoft also took some time to demo the next version of Windows running on ARM based processors. The UI was current, but the platform was the next generation. Microsoft mentioned that all current applications would work on the next version of Windows that are based on X86 (though ARM would need some work for apps). The demo included Word running on ARM system and printer drivers, HTML & Full HD video on a Tegra 2, utilizing the ARM chips own GPU. Microsoft sure has given some momentum to NVIDIA’s ARM CPU plans and Qualcomm & Texas Instruments are also readying their versions!

Windows Phone 7 at CES

Microsoft had plenty to talk about WP7 at its CES keynote. While a lot was a recap of what the OS really brings to consumers, we got a sneak peak at how Copy / Paste works, though we are still trying to recap through the video if we can get a clear picture of how that is implemented. According to Microsoft there are 20,000 developers making apps for Windows Phone 7 and over 100 new apps are being added to the marketplace everyday. The current tally is 5500 apps live! The WP7 update expected next month would bring performance updates along with the copy / paste function.

New Surface

Microsoft also showed off the new Surface computer. If you are forgetting what the Surface was, it was a table shaped computer with 5 cameras inside it to monitor dozens finger touches at once. Video (just to remind you):

The 2nd gen of Surface takes things to a totally new level. The whole thing is now 4? thick, and with infrared sensors, every pixel is a camera, so it can sense the input from every pixel on the screen (the technology is called PixelSense, if you understand what that means, its crazy). Let us attempt to explain. The demo showed a pice of paper with “I can see” written on it and once placed upside down on the Surface screen and it could take the entire input from the paper pixel by pixel, as if its a scanner. So the next time you walk in to a bank that has the Surface 2nd gen, you simply have to touch screen with a relevant brochure or account statement to get started with the information you want.

Even as the crowds flock to Vegas to check out CES, Intel has delivered a whammy of sorts at Mumbai by taking the veil off the second generation of its Core processor family. While there has been the usual talk of better performance, battery life and efficiency, the most spectacular change has been in the graphics department. To quote the release, this is “the first “visibly smart” microarchitecture to combine visual and 3D graphics technology with performance-leading microprocessors on a single chip. Incorporating the newly architected Intel HD Graphics on each 32nm die enables significant graphics performance improvements over the previous generation graphics, for both HD media processing and mainstream gaming.”

In simple English, that means that you could perhaps get by without having to invest in a graphics card for your machine (do note the “perhaps,” though, as we have not actually seen machines driven by the new processors in action.)

The new processor graphics technology will focus on areas like high-definition (HD) video, photos, mainstream gaming, multi-tasking and online socializing and multimedia. Every 2nd Generation Intel Core processor will come with inbuilt technologies like Intel HD graphics, and going by what we are hearing, these onboard graphics might actually be pretty good and a far cry from earlier efforts that were just par for the course for viewing video and messing with higher Windows settings but came a cropper when high end games came into the equation. New features in the processors include Intel Quick Sync Video, a new version of Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) which adds 1080 HD and content protection for those beaming HD content from their notebooks to televisions, and QuickSync Video which makes editing and sharing video literally a snap – a 4 minute HD video that used to take 4 minutes to convert to play on an iPod would now take just 16 seconds.

Intel announced announced more than 20 processors, wireless adapters and chipsets, including the new Intel Core i7, i5 and i3 processors, Intel 6 Series chipsets, and Intel Centrino Wi-Fi and WiMAX adaptors. As to when we can actually expect products with these running in them, well, here is the release again: “More than 500 laptop and desktop PC platform designs are expected from all major computer makers worldwide based on these products. The quad core based systems will be available in early to mid January timeframe with additional dual core versions in February.”

We are waiting for them. And for the graphic cards manufacturers’ reply. For a reply will come. Depend on it.

It has got the looks, the specs and even the OS. Does Sony Ericsson finally have something that can be called an iPhone/Nexus S competitor? We are waiting for the release date and price before drawing any conclusions, but as of now, we are VERY impressed.

Shades of the palm Foleo, you might say. Except that the connecting magic here will be done by a Multimedia dock and Laptop dock and a Webtop application that runs a full Mozilla Firefox 3.6 browser and supports Adobe FlashPlayer. The Laptop doc is going to remind a lot of users of the Foleo as it is actually a lot like a dumb notebook, with an 11.6-inch screen, 36Wh three-cell battery that delivers up to eight hours of battery life, full keyboard, stereo speakers with a slot for the phone to be kept at the back. The Multimedia dock on the other hand has three USB ports and an HDMI port enabling connections to a keyboard, mouse, speakers and HDMI-compatible monitor or connecting an HDMI-compatible television.

While the docks and webtop app have got most of the attention, the Atrix is in itself quite a powerful device. It packs in a dual core processor with each core providing 1 GHz of processing power (make that 2 GHz of processing power in all, something we had speculated about last year), a 4 inch qHD (960 x 540) display, 1 GB of RAM, upto 48 GB of storage space, two cameras (with the rear end one capable of HD video), and a biometric fingerprint reader for security freaks. Our only disappointment? That it runs Android 2.2 – surely the “world’s most powerful smartphone” should be running the latest version! The device is expected in Q2 2011.

We had been talking about it for ages and now it has been spotted officially.
But what has zapped us is the display which has a staggering 1280×800 resolution. There are sensors galore, including a gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting. There is also the matter of Honeycomb, which is the first version of Android designed entirely for tablets. Although it was not fully demoed at the event, indications are that the iPad might finally have competition when the XOOM is launched in Q1 2001 with Verizon. Of course, a lot would display on apps that can make the most of those specs!
