2009 IGF Mobile Competition

The Independent Games Festival is proud to present the second annual IGF Mobile competition, a contest set up to promote innovation in portable games, from cellphone games on handsets including the iPhone, through other mobile devices to PSP and DS titles.

About IGF Mobile

The CMP Game Group established the Independent Games Festival in 1998 to encourage innovation in game development – and the main IGF Competition is now in its eleventh year.

In the same spirit, the IGF organizers announced the first-ever IGF Mobile competition in 2007 – a contest set up to promote innovation in portable games. The competition returns for its second year with a continued commitment to honoring the unique mobile-specific possibilities for games, with submissions being accepted on mobile phone handsets (such as the iPhone), PDAs, and handheld game consoles including the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS.

What is Greenfoot?
Consider Greenfoot as a combination between a framework for creating two-dimensional grid assignments in Java and an integrated development environment (class browser, editor, compiler, execution, etc.) suitable for novice programmers. While Greenfoot supports the full Java language, it is especially useful for programming exercises that has a visual element. The Challenge

Invent an interesting Greenfoot scenario, implement it, and submit it to the Greenfoot Gallery. Submissions get scored in a number of categories (details below). The best submissions at the end of the competition win the prizes.

Rules and details

Please read the following rules carefully.

• All contest submissions must have been created by the submitting author(s). All authors must be credited. Third party code must be clearly identified as such.

• Submissions will be made into one of three categories:
  • school under 16 (pupils in a primary or secondary school under the age of 16) (to qualify for this category, participants must be under 16 years old on 15th Oct 2008)
  • school 16+ (students in the secondary education system at 16 years or over
  • beyond school (everyone out of the secondary education system, e.g. university students and other adults)
• Submissions must be made to the Greenfoot Gallery. Contest participants must have a valid Gallery account.
• Contest submissions must be tagged with a specific prescribed tag for the contest age category. The tags to be used are codepoint-08-under-16 / codepoint-08-school-16+ / codepoint-08-general
• In each category, the first prize winner will win a Nintendo Wii games console; the runner-up entry wins an 8GB iPod Touch (or cash equivalents, if preferred).

Each team can propose only one innovative idea. Multiple entries are not allowed.

Entries:

The entries should be in the form of a technical paper according to the prescribed “Submission format”. The team details are supposed to be filled up while registering your team online.

Submission of Entries:

The entries should be uploaded online with your unique team name given during registration.
The teams will receive an acknowledgment from Schneider Electric on receiving the entries. If you do not receive a response from us then please contact us through one of the channels on the Contact Us page.

Final Presentation:

The short listed teams will be invited to present their ideas/solutions at our research and development facility in Bangalore. A panel of judges will assess the presentations and select the best from them. Each team will be allotted a time of 20 minutes for presentation and another 5 minutes for Q & A. Teams are requested to carry their presentations on a CD or USB storage device.

Although your design should aim to address the needs of SUNY-Farmingdale, a great design will have key elements that are applicable to other buildings around the world. Mobile technology, including everything from inventive applications for smart phones to simple text messaging, is increasingly ubiquitous in the developing world. USAID challenges you to explore its potential through an innovation for maximum development impact in areas such as health, banking, education, agricultural trade, or other pressing development issues.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Government agency that delivers economic and humanitarian assistance worldwide on behalf of the American people, is sponsoring a challenge to find the best in mobile innovations for good. Through a NetSquared community vote, fifteen finalists will be chosen. A panel of judges, selected by USAID, will then select the winners. The first place winner will receive a grant of $10,000, the two runner-ups will receive grants of $5,000 each. All three winners will have the opportunity to present their ideas to senior USAID officials, experts, and the public in Washington D.C.

How It Works?
Individuals and organizations working with mobile technologies to create change are invited to share their projects with the community through the USAID Development 2.0 Challenge submission form.

Once the project submission process has closed,there will be a community vote to select the top fifteen projects. Those projects will then go in front of a panel of USAID-selected judges who will determine the three winners.
