1st IAA Planetary Defense Conference and Research Student Competition

About:
In 2029 asteroid 99942 Apophis (2004 MN4) will flyby the Earth at a distance of about 32 000 km. This is closer than any known past or future approach by natural objects larger than about 10 meters (other than objects that have entered Earth’s atmosphere). After a resonant flyby, the asteroid will then return towards Earth with two potential impact dates between 2036 and 2037.

This close encounter with 99942 Apophis in 2029 will provide a window of opportunity for scientific and technological research. Research students are encouraged to think about innovative ways in which this close encounter can be utilised to increase our scientific and/or technological knowledge of small bodies and their surrounding environment.

Papers will be welcomed on a variety of subjects that can be related to the theme of Apophis and small body encounters. Subjects for papers might include, but are not limited to; modelling of the small asteroid environment and related effects (e.g. plasma environment, dust, solar radiation, Yarkovsky effect); geology and geophysics of small bodies, dynamics and control related to Apophis-like rendezvous and interception scenarios; innovative deflection strategies and mission architectures, etc.

The best student paper will be awarded a prize.

FuturArc Prize 2009 is organised by FuturArc Journal. The FuturArc Prize was launched in 2007 by the BCI Group of Companies through its publication arm, FuturArc Journal, to seek out innovative Green building designs for sites in Australasia. The Competition has two objectives: first, to create a platform for talented individuals – professionals and students – who are keen on environmental issues; second, to encourage the construction industry as a whole to move towards sustainable design.

Final Presentation:

The short listed teams will be invited to present their ideas/solutions at our research and development facility in Bangalore. Grassroutes is a movement that encourages youth to embark on road-trips, discover change-makers at the grassroots and understand first-hand the problems that plague our nation. From their journeys, these social journalists will bring back stories of ideas, inspiration and change, that we believe will get all of us thinking of ways in which we can do our bit. The program sponsors 6 teams of adventurous, passionate young people every year who will, on their return, serve as ambassadors of social change.

Advantages of being Grassroutes fellow:

• Travel to a pre-decided location and spend a week there trying to research and understand the on-ground reality – the problem at hand, the non-profits, the change-makers and their actions, the community and the local government.
• Play the role of social journalists and capture the stories of all the people involved in community development, and on your return, share them with the rest of the country.
• Be an activist by lending a helping hand to the change-makers and use your skill-set to help the local community in your own little ways.
• Serve as an ambassador for the non-profit after the road-trip and engage more people in your efforts to support the non-profit and its activities.
• Complete the road-trip experience by exploring more sights and sounds around your place of stay. Yup, we’ll take care of the bills!

Application Procedure:
If you are one of them, YoFa will sponsor you and your team (4-6 members) on a 10 day road-trip that will give you the opportunity to discover change-makers, people, places, problems and possible solutions… and then, challenge you to find ways to do your bit.
3 teams will be selected for the winter season edition (December holidays, 2008).

The Reserve Bank of  India (RBI) has launched the RBI Young Scholars Award Scheme to generate interest in and awareness about the Indian banking sector and RBI. Under the Scheme, the RBI will select a maximum of 150 young scholars through a countrywide competitive examination and awarded scholarship. Selection test will focus on the role and functions of RBI and banks in India and will be held in English as well as in all major regional languages. Selected candidates will be required to work on projects in select offices of RBI for 2 to 3 months and will be paid a consolidated stipend of Rs. 7500/- per month during the duration of the project.

The second HASTAC/MacArthur Digital Media and Learning Competition is now open! The second (2008) Competition similarly seeks to mobilize the field of Digital Media and Learning through a $2 million open call, supporting learning entrepreneurs, educators, communicators, and innovators. The Competition supports pioneers who use new technologies to envision the future of participatory learning.

The theme for this year’s Competition is Participatory Learning. Awards will be made in two categories: Innovation in Participatory Learning, and Young Innovators, a special category designed to promote the contributions of 18-25-year-old innovators to digital media and learning.

Innovation in Participatory Learning Awards:
Innovation in Participatory Learning awards are designed to support the most promising and dynamic projects that enable and enhance innovative participatory learning.
